Typically British...

Post by dtaai-maai »

We've had some interesting cross-cultural examples recently, what with US gun laws and hhfarang's conversion to British humour.

I've been listening to some downloads of the BBC radio programmes Just A Minute and Sorry, I Haven't A Clue and I thought they were a bit like the rules of cricket - completely incomprehensible to anyone not brought up with them.

I'll start with those three as my contribution, but what other things would Brits give as examples of "typically British"?

And - probably a completely different list - what examples would non-Brits give??

"Stiff Upper Lip"; "Manners Maketh the Man"; HP Sauce (despite being made in Belgium these days) and Yorkshire Pudding, to name just a few

My dad told me that during the second world war there was a lot of jealousy towards American GI's stationed in the UK our men folk used to say " over sexed, over paid, and over here" :D

Red Telephone Boxes; London Buses; Black Cabs; Harrods; Fortnum & Mason; "Wimbledon" and "The Open" - cousins across the Pond, please note it is not The British Open, but just The Open, the oldest and the most important MAJOR in the golfing calendar... :butt:
