Ice-hockey World Championship -12

Post by Bamboo Grove »

Any favourites? I have one, last years champs, Finland. I'm watching the first match and after the first period we are 1-0 up against Belorus. Could be 4-0. I'll give my vote for Finland to retain the championship: we don't have a foreign manager, nor any other internal problems, just looking good. And that's when we usually fail, but still.....

No, Johnny but to most of us Europeans the World Cup is a bigger thing than Stanley Cup. Even KHL (The Russian Hockey League) is beginning to draw more interest than SC nowadays with so many Europeans, particularly Finns playing there.

Here in Canada the "World" is barely on the radar. The players in it are all ones eliminated from the SC or fom teams not good enough to make the playoffs. KHL is still seriously inferior to the NHL though. Some pretty good countrymen of yours playing in the SC although Pekka Rinne has not been great so far. Timonen is steady though.

Tough match tonight but finally we were able to find the goal. It's Finland 5, Switzerland 2. It was much closer than what you could expect from the result. The Swiss dominated the first and second periods but two goals from Detroit's Filppula made 5-2 in two third period minutes.

Stanley Cup yesterday, Washington about to win 3-2 with 6 seconds left. NYR get a goal to tie then win after 1:35 of overtime. What a reversal from victory to defeat in less than two minutes. One reason we love sports!

It was an easy 7-1 victory against France tonight. Now two tough games ahead: Canada tomorrow and U.S.A. on Sunday. Nobody can predict what will happen on those two matches. Anyway, it's 4 victories in 4 matches for us now and we are surely in the knock-out stage.

First loss to Finland, congratulations to Canada. We controlled the first period and went 2-0 ahead, even in the middle of the second we were 3-1 ahead. Canada were the better team after that and won 3-5 (the last one to an empty goal). Canada will most likely win the Helsinki group but the battle goes on. Bring on the U.S.

johnnyk, it's still a long way to go. The Helsinki group's no. 1 will play the same group's no. 4 in quarter-finals and the second and third will do the same. This will also happen in the Stockholm group, where Russia and Sweden play. Then in the semi-finals the Helsinki and Stockholm groups' teams will play against each other to decide the finalists. Nothing has been won or lost, yet.
