Re-Sizing of Images

Post by Big Boy »

I have a few very poor images e.g.
otsuka.jpg
otsuka.jpg (6.33 KiB) Viewed 1223 times
Could somebody please advise where I could go in Hua Hin to get the images touched up and significantly enlarged? I'd probably be looking at about 12" x 10(ish)" as a minimum.

The Kodak shop may be able to do something or guide you in the right direction.

I used to work in a photo shop back in Hampshire that did all this. That was 9 years ago so I'd be surprised if the Kodak shop can't help you.

Thanks GLC, I was thinking of them, but wanted somebody else to tell me before I walked down to see them.

Hello Big Boy,
I enhanced "otsuka" to 8x8+ and attached it here. SIze as jpg just below 1 MB, unpacked 16 MB+, if attachment process may reduce the size please mail me an original file so I can return it directly to you with comments about limitations etc.

Hi JuiceLover, thank you for your response. I have not been deliberately ignoring you, but I do not have access to my laptop very much at the moment (it is with somebody in hospital for a while).

Regarding the images, all that I have are taken from the Internet (Google Images). My son is setting up his own Karate Dojo, and it is normal to have a photo of the founder (Otsuka who died many years ago) displayed. Unfortunately these images are the best that I can come up with ie do a search on 'otsuka sensei'.

Did some googling. Found out his name was Hironori Otsuka (sensei is a title). Here is a larger color photo http://www.oshawawado-kai.com/images/pa ... hoto01.jpg. This site has several images related to Wado Ryu, including several of Otasuka sensi. http://explow.com/wado_ryu. Here is a much larger photo taken from a newspaper. The halftone dots are obvious when the photo is viewed full size (click on it). http://www.billinghamkarateclub.org/com ... 515762.jpg. Photo editors have long since figured out how to improve such halftone images.

For some people post processing (aka Photoshopping) is a big part of their photography hobby. I know of one forum where one can post a photo in need of improvement and they'll happily take a shot at it. A good story helps but isn't necessary, e.g., you don't know how to post process and it's a gift for you son. http://forums.steves-digicams.com/xtreme-makeover-82/. I'd bet there are other such forums, but I don't know of any specific ones.

Hi BigBoy,
did some googling fro alternative images, nevertheless most pics on the net are lowres thereby limiting regular upscaling. The B/W ones are actually the best eliminating screen dots (haven't tried yet).
When googling I realised Mr. Otsuka is a legend – it may be acceptable doing a workaround applying a graphic effect in a moderate extent.
Attaching a strip in lowres, upper row retouched (except two).
If you find any solution acceptable I'll gladly have a go at it i highres. Just drop me a line if necessary to keep our highres transmissions outside the forum.

Hmm, for some reason my attachment does'nt seem to stick to my post, it's just a 725K jpg (same with my first post. Drop me a line and I send it to you directly.

Homer: thanks for your valuable research!

You're welcome. It was fun.

Here is the result of a sloppy 15 minute edit of the large newspaper image I found, scaled to meet forum requirements.

And the original, also scaled down.

Well guys, I took Homer's sloppy 15 minute edit of the large newspaper image down to the local Kodak shop, and they produced a perfect 12" x 10" image from it. Thanks again guys :thumb:
