MP urges Thai women: Marry a farang for an easier life

A Thai MP has gotten into hot water over his controversial suggestion for poor Thai women who want an easy life: “find a farang husband.”

Pheu Thai MP Sunai Julphongsathorn’s words caused a barrage of complaints on Thai web forums after a clip of his comments (embedded below) surfaced on YouTube recently.

The 12-minute video was apparently shot on August 19 at a seminar at a school in Samut Prakan.

Sunai tells the audience of around 1,000 red shirts to find a farang husband for an easy life “because European governments give you everything for free.”

Sunai went on: “Get a German husband. Get a Swedish husband. Get a Norwegian husband. People used to love [Thailand] unreservedly. But the more they loved the country, the poorer they got. The more they loved the country, the stupider they got.”

“All you need is a farang husband and their government will pay you to study,” he said.

Even more controversially, he then implied that the best way to study a foreign language was by sleeping with a foreigner.

“Sitting studying is too slow. Lie down to study, then go to the hospital. They will pay you to have the baby… It’s all free, right up to the shitty diapers.”

Many web users were furious at Sunai’s comments. They said they were highly inappropriate coming from an MP, particularly one in the Pheu Thai Party whose prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, had become the first woman to administer the country.

Sunai later told reporters that he had never meant to insult Thai women. He just wanted to show Thais how far behind their welfare state was when compared with European countries.

He said he had been saying such things for some time and it was because he wanted Thailand to have a welfare system that was the equal of those in other countries, where education and maternity services are free.

At last an MP that speaks the truth, with facts to back it all up.

The MP's only mistake was to not advise Thai men to do the same as they could get married here in england and sponge off the social aswell. If they use Elton and David as an example, they can even adopt kids to bump up their tax credits.

Well, he had better hope he doesn't bump into my wife. Unfortunately there's no free rides where I come from. Well are free services, but quality leaves a lot to be desired.

I do like the bit about laying down to learn a foreign language. Let's just hope the ladies listen to his very sound advice.

Well I dont know what European govts are "paying" to go to school and have a baby? I never got money to go to school, or ever heard about a govt payout for a baby. Unless you think living off welfare is some kind of a life? Losers.

In my country, all parents receive approx 12,000 Bt per month regardless.Doesn't matter if you are rich or on welfare, the amount is the same.

Some of the welfare moms make a "career" of it.

Forgot to mention, 12,000 Bt is paid for every child, whether you pay taxes or are on the dole.

Well the guy's proposal is very sober. But it should be accompanied by an ease in visa requirements, rights for farangs to own house and land - so we do not have to put everything in the name of the spouse (and allowing her to run away with the whole lot).

On reading further the Mp said he was just trying to show how the Thai welfare system needs to be improved and what he said is not what he meant?
One word is not a story but it is the beginning and end of one.

That's called 'damage limitation' once you realised you've opened your big fat mouth too far and stirred up the brown stuff.

He was playing to his small-minded audience in 'hill-billy land' on a stage where he thought no-one would quote him or listen.

IMO, for the MP, it's a case of 'Ground Control to Major Tom......can you hear me Major Tom?'

To be honest, that's what I made from reading it. Obviously a poor choice of words, but clearly he was saying "our healthcare is nothing compared to Europe" as opposed to "you all really DO need to marry farrangs and stop expecting care from us"
