Do you have a GPS in your vehicle?
If so, how reliable is the directions (excluding Bangkok)?

Mine is excellent - including Bangkok.

Over the last week, I used it to get to a friend's hotel in Bangkok, and then on to Somdet in the North East. A few days later I did the return trip.

My satnav is a very old Tom Tom, which was purchased in the UK. I simply paid (less than £20) to upgrade it with Thai maps.

Mine is a Garmin unit. It was already built into the car when I bought it.

We went to Hua Hin Hills Vineyard this afternoon, and my Tom Tom satnav decided to take me off-road for 7 Kms

It was actually great fun, and included taking me across a stream. However, I don't think I'd have enjoyed it so much in a month or so's time when the rains have soaked the ground a bit more, and maybe that stream has grown into a river. However, I must say this is the first time my satnav has ever let me down.

I think the fault lies partially with me. The road outside my house is not shown as paved, so whenever I start from home, I am asked if I want to avoid unpaved roads, to which I have to answer No, otherwise I get told that no route is available. Maybe in future I need to set the route once I've reached the end of my road.

I have a Garmin GPS and it is my savior. I got tired of wife saying she knew where a place was then having to stop several times to ask directions and wasting gobs of time in the process. Whenever I go anywhere that I haven't been to before I try to get the GPS coordinates and plug them in. Never has let me down. Went to Pukett and Thai's in car kept trying to get me to go another way down some small two lane roads but ultimately in the correct direction. GPS kept me on the larger and faster roads which the Thai's could not understand.

I bought a Garmin Nuvi from a mate who was leaving Thailand. We make frequent journeys from Hua Hin to That Phanom in Isaan. First time I used it, it decided to take me a different road I never knew existed. Now I never go over the mountain road to Sakon Nakhon. Easily took 1 to 1 1/2 hours off the journey.

Recently bought a Toyota with sat nav fitted ..... not as good as Garmin I'm afraid.

Unless they have recently changed, Toyota have an exclusive agreement with Garmin and only Garmin systems are fitted in Toyotas as standard equipment. I have a factory fitted Garmin in my Toyota and when it was delivered it had some issues. Garmin and Toyota worked together to finally resolve the problems.

Garmin sat nav map was updated last July. Toyota is only three months old.
At a junction around Roi Et one wants to go left and the other wants to go right. They match all the way to that point.

Yes, this is similar to one of the issues that I had with the factory fitted Garmin. I believe that they order them from Garmin in advance with special features like locating all of the Toyota dealers and service centres. Sometimes this means that they are installing maps that have already been updated in other devices. They corrected this for me but only after I complained.

My new Accord has Honda's own system fitted. Thus far it has proved very accurate and reliable both around HH and in Bangkok.

Apparently the normal service routines include updates as and when.

So far - so good 8)

I wish that Toyota would adopt the same policy. Currently they will only update once, during the first year warranty period, after that you need to pay for any update.
