Car Tax/Insurance Renewal

Post by Big Boy »

It's almost a year since my car was eventually delivered, so I guess its getting close to car tax and insurance time.

How does it work in Thailand please? Is it like the UK where reminders and necessary documentation drop through the letter box, or do I have to do everything myself?

I'll be honest, I've hated this last year's 'free' insurance because I received very little information i.e. I needed two relatively small bits of work done on the car, and I decided to pay myself because my current insurers have been so vague. I will be much happier when I can arrange my own cover, and know exactly what I'm signing up for.

You will not receive any notice of renewal. Take you blue book to Matt and he will do the lot.

Thanks Nereus - I'm very comfortable dealing with Matt. I will pop down to see him a bit closer to the time.

I renewed the insurance and tax for my Pajero Sport with the Mitsubishi dealership in HH, who were very efficient and competitive. Not taking anything away from Matt at AA who is also very good and appreciate that the Ford Dealership have not done anything to endear themselves to you BB, in fact quite the opposite, so in your case, AA would be your best bet.

I agree also and yes, we take care for the road tax without charging extra fee.

Don't worry, I'll be there in a couple of week's time. What do I need to bring with me? Will my blue book (I assume I've got one somewhere) suffice, or is there more?

We've always done the tax ourselves at the office up in Tha Yang and it's surprisingly efficient, you can be in and out of there in about ten minutes flat. The insurance is from Viriyah on canal road, no reminder, you just turn up with the documents and cash and it's also taken care of in a few minutes.

BB, Matt at AA will do everything for you. Email him for a quote so you'll know your options and how much money to take down. Don't wait too close to the renewal date as it takes a couple of weeks to get everything sorted and get your paperwork. Even though you can be insured immediately, I waited too close last time and was very uncomfortable driving around without all the documentation of proof, should I need it. Here's what he needed at my last renewal.

-Blue book
-copy of the ID Card or passport of the owner according to the car blue book
-copy drivers license
-Pictures of the car

If you park the car/truck to be insured near his office, like in the lot across the road, he'll take the photos for you and he also will make the copies of the above documents in his office if you don't want to be bothered to do it ahead of time.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Photos of the car. I wouldn't have thought of that one - good idea, and could help prevent fraudulent claims.

At the place we go to you park outside the office and they just look out of the window!
