Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

Post by PeteC »

This is unarguably the grandaddy of all car shows and the top show in world. Held yearly during August. The below web site has enough to keep you occupied for an hour or so with photos and information. I also add in a CNN site with photos of some of the cars. Unfortunately no car show girls at the event. :D Pete

Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Once each year, on the third Sunday in August, about 200 of the most prized collector cars and motorcycles in the world roll onto what is often called the best finishing hole in golf — the famed eighteenth fairway at Pebble Beach. Tire meets turf and transformation occurs: the stage is set for one of the most competitive events in the automotive world. The occasion is the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Originally a small social event paired with a road race through the pine and cypress forests of Pebble Beach, the Pebble Beach Concours has grown into the top-ranking collector car show in the world. People from all over the globe come to compete in or simply enjoy the event here at Pebble Beach.
TAKE A TOUR THROUGH THE 60 YEARS OF THE CONCOURS.

The Concours is not a contest of speed, but of excellence. Automobiles and motorcycles are judged for their historical accuracy, their technical merit and their style—and the best garner reward and recognition.
So, WHAT MAKES A CONCOURS CAR?

The 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will feature the following marques and special classes:

• Lincoln Custom Coachwork
• Vanvooren Coachwork
• Simplex
• Aston Martin Centennial
• Lamborghini
• Porsche 911
• BMW 507
• French Motorcycles

“Each of these categories by implication also highlights the contributions, creativity, ingenuity and, because it is an important aspect of the marques’ success, persistence of their creators. Their personalities are embodied in the marques’ character and in their names, drawing attention not only to the creators of the featured marques but also to the other pioneers of the automobile whose fabulous, fast, historic contributions fill the 18th fairway of the Pebble Beach Golf Links.” –Sports Car Digest

The success of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance rests in large part on the knowledgeable experts who help to select and judge the automobiles and motorcycles invited to appear on our show field. These experts also make a significant contribution to the automotive world as a whole by helping to establish an accurate record of these vehicles. Click here to MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE CONCOURS.

The automobiles on our show field and the new cars on our concept lawn cover more than a hundred years of automotive style and technology. Our automotive past is ever expanding and this Concours is committed to celebrating automotive excellence both past and present. Increasingly, as in the early days of the Concours, innovative concepts and new cars debut at Pebble Beach. A total of 17 concepts and new cars were unveiled at the 2012 event. Packard prime at Pebble Beach

A truly unique 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria has given its owners their second win at the world's most exclusive and competitive car show, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance held on August 17-18 in California.

The car's owners, Joseph Cassini III and wife Margie, of New Jersey, previously won the best of show award in 2004, with their 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet.

A one-of-a-kind car, the Packard not only has the rare Dietrich Convertible Victoria custom bodywork but the body was further customised by the first owner, who specified teardrop fenders and dual rear-mounted spare tyres.

The auctions held in the Monterey area in California, near Pebble Beach, have become the source of huge classic-car sales news.

Topping the bunch this year was a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider, which sold for $30.6 million. It's one of just 10 made, and until August 18, was still with the family of its original owner.

It's the most expensive road car sold at auction, surpassed only by the ex-Fangio Mercedes W196 Formula One car, which sold in July for $32.1 million.

Equally as amazing, the family of the Ferrari's late owner have said they would donate all the proceeds of the sale to charity.

Oh yes, and long-time rock star petrol head, Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, also had a good day at Pebble. His 1953 Ferrari 250 MM Pinin Farina Berlinetta won him the Enzo Ferrari Trophy.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!
