Motorbike chain lubricant

Post by Arguz »

Hi guys

I recently got a new bike, Honda CRF 250. I´ve been trying to find a drivechainlube to my bike, but it seems quite impossible. After some searching on the web i found "Veloil chain lube". Any of You used this?

Or what lube do You use for Your motorcycle drivechains (with O-rings)?

Did you buy the 250L or M? I bought the L.
Not that it matters.... I buy the chain lub. from HomePro. Pretty good chain grease but the cans are not great and most of the grease ends up everywhere else bar the chain.
I haven't seen decent chain-lub. spray cans in Hua Hin but you can probably purchase online from BKK.

I bring mine with me from the UK..Shell's c/lube was crap, but Rock Oil's seems to work well at staying on the chain..bearing in mind I've got white wheels!..5-5.

You can buy lithium grease at Home Pro. Gets a little messy if you put to much on. It's what I use to preserve mine when I store the bike.
Why is it called 'after dark' when it really is 'after light'?

I managed to buy a spray-pack of Sonax - http://www.sonax.com/Product-Search/%28 ... il-NanoPro - chain lube from the Suzuki dealer on Petchkasam Road. Took a bit of mime work and pointing to explain what I wanted, but worth it in the end. BTW according to google translate chain oil is น้ำมันโซ่
pronounced ( better Thai speakers please correct me ) Nam an so.
Good luck.

Hi again

Thanks for all replies. I will try the Veloil first. Waiting for a delivery from a dealer.

To Ginjaninja, yes I have a CRF 250 L. Great bike. I just love the suspension. Like to go on some long trips and the roads here in Thailand aint as in Europe, so this bike is great.

The CBR250 has the same o-ring chain, I usually give it a blast of Sonax before every ride.

A novice question.......wouldn't WD-40 work at least as a temporary measure? Pete

Pete, the following from bicycle forum but applies generally
WD-40 was developed by the military in the 50s as a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect missile parts. It quickly became a household item when people discovered it had thousands of other uses as a cleaner, rust-prevention agent, squeak-stopper and more. It also works wonders as a light lubricant on small items like hinges, locks, and toys.

Bicycle chains, on the other hand, are far too heavy and fast-moving for the lubricating power of WD-40 to have any effect at all. As a matter of fact, WD-40 will actually strip away any existing lubricant and leave your drivetrain dry – metal on metal. Basically, spraying this stuff on your chain is worse than using no lubricant at all!
Obviously, I strongly recommend using chain oil purchased from your local bike shop. Just go down there and ask them for regular waterproof chain oil. It shouldn’t be any more than 10 or 12 bucks, and it’s the best thing you can buy for your bike
