Looking for resonably priced Used Car

Post by JimmyD »

Thanks for the suggestions. I do want and need to buy a used car but have yet to drive on the 'wrong' side of the car and road. And, most importantly, I don't want to spend more than about 300000B if possible and from what little I've read buying a used car here sounds like another potential minefield just waiting for me.

Did see one thread from last Sep. on this site that mentioned a Thai guy at a garage N. of town called L Garage (I think) but don't know anything about him myself and should probably wait at least a few more weeks anyway to get more adjusted and give myself some time to think about purchasing my own transport.

Thanks again for the prompt response and suggestion concerning rental properties. As mentioned on my intro thread, let me know if you're in the Market Village area some day and I'll meet you there for lunch to at least give you my take on living in Austin if you're interested. Laptop batt down to 7% so I'll be signing out now. Later.

A reasonable idea for most maybe but not for me. I've never been a motorbike rider tho a friend taught me the basics several years ago with his Yamaha 550. A couple of years ago, while at my then filipina girlfriend's moms house out in the country in central Luzon, I was bored so thought I'd try riding her motor bike. She started it up for me in their front yard but the engine choked when I didn't give it enough throttle. So she started it up again, I gave it more gas and bolted out thru the gate, across the dirt road and into the rice field on the other side. Fortunately, because of the enbankment, I wiped out before hitting the water. With no helmet (stupid) I only scraped my leg but learned my lesson.

Though about a bicycle but watching other riders on the main road with the traffic and parked cars decided I'm not doing that either (even for the exercise, which I need more of). Used to be a pretty good mountain bike rider only a few years back but broke my collar bone on one occasion, which took months to heal, so learned that even a minor injury like that can become a significant setback... especially as a person gets older.

But thanks for the reply anyway. I appreciate the offer to assist with ideas I might not have considered already.

Yes, "L Garage" is the best bet IMHO. And for 300,000 Baht, you should be able to get something somewhat nice.
He is my mechanic and I trust him completely. Khun Pichai,0863399491, Soi 42 across from Palace Park (very end from Hua Hin.) The nice thing about the car vs bike is the weather. If you are there year round, you will need something to get around in the rain and a car or truck is better. A bike is great for short trips around HH and in heavier traffic and weekends. Good luck.
I wouldn't have to manage my anger if people could learn to mange their stupidity!

Great motorbike story! Look on Baht and Sold for used cars.

Thanks Sunandfun... don't remember but it was probably ur recommendation that I saw from last Sep. As recommended at that time, I should probably take a baht bus and try to talk to him in person. Hopefully, they're open early cuz the baht buses later in the day are crazy full of tourists right now. And very good point about the weather not always being the way it's been the 3 short weeks since I arrived.

JW... good advice. I heard about the site (on this forum no doubt) but only looked there for rental properties. Since then (today), I visited the website and filled out the contact form for hot... after noticing the ref. attached to your responses. Assuming there is a connection, I hope we will be able to talk in person sometime on that topic.

Speaking of attached 'references', I really like and can relate to yours Sunandfun... especially given where I'm from (and part of the reason I decided to 'check out' from there).

Thank you both.

The problem is that there is no resonably priced used Car in Thailand compare to what you get, and the price for a new car which is also to expensive in my opinion.

Paul,

Thanks but I'm not ready to jump at something right away. Just arrived 3 weeks ago, need to review auto purchase requirements (I think one is visit to local immigration office to get some kind of residency certification) and am still waiting on my US bank to send test transaction to Thai bank in NYC so I have a method other than ATM to transfer funds for monthly living expenses, etc.

You may not have intended it, but it might have been a better idea to get everything in place first before advertising that you're looking for a car - somebody responded positively and you've now had to tell them your not yet ready!!

Sorry but my intent was not to start a discussion about buying a car. It was part of a response on another post that I initiated which was moved by someone to a new post about car buying. 'My bad' I guess but I honestly had planned to wait before asking about used car purchase.

JimmyD, you were discussing housing I believe, and then you suddenly switched to car purchase which is a completely different section of the forum. This site is split into various categories for a good reason.

Big Boy,

Again, my apologies. I am new to 'forum' discussions and need to do a better job of both staying on topic and keeping my postings and responses as brief as possible. I do appreciate the valuable information provided by you and users of this forum.
