An area of the seaside resort town of Hua Hin was left without power for one hour on Wednesday when a macaque monkey suffered a 22,000 volt shock after climbing an electricity pylon.
Hua Hin police and electricity officials rushed to the residential compound of the municipality office on Phetkasem Road after reports that a male macaque had been seriously injured from being electrocuted.
They said the animal may have lost its way, wandered into the town and climbed an electricity pylon supporting 22,000 volt power lines before it was electrocuted.
The animal's mishap caused a power outage to the area around the municipality office for an hour. Full power was restored to the town by 10.30am.
The macaque was sent to veterinarians at Kasetsart University Hospital in Hua Hin district, Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Re: Macaque causes Hua Hin power outage
The animal was apparently carrying an inflatable crocodile, a banana laced with chillies, a rubber snake, some pepper spray and appeared to have been hit with a slingshot a number of times.
Under questioning the animal revealed that he was on his way to get a taxi to the airport when he lost grip of an insulated wire and he can't remember anything after that.
The police failed to find out how the monkey came to have a one way business class ticket from Bangkok to Copenhagen in his possession.

As an aside, I always thought that being electrocuted resulted in death, as opposed to being seriously injured?

This article today tries to explain why many animals avoid power lines - evidently, the macaque didn't have his UV light detector on:

BTW Buksi and Lomu - surely you remember the power outage in the centre of HH years ago caused by a dog pissing on an electricity pole?

Yes Mags a salutary warning to any drunks on the way home from Binta block at night. Always pee in the gutter.

I've lost my mind and I am making no effort to find it.
