Southern rail service from Hua Hin to receive major facelift
Southern rail service from Hua Hin to receive major facelift
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is to greatly improve its rail routes in southern provinces.
SRT Governor Prapat Chongsanguan revealed that the SRT had allocated 6 billion baht, for its largest railway renovation in a hundred years. The massive project will take three years and is to commence in May.
The governor said the renovation will begin with soil re-enforcement, and the switching of wooden railway sleepers to concrete sleepers.
The renovation will begin at Hua Hin Railway Station in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and will end at Sungai Kolok Railway Station in Narathiwat Province.
When completed, the governor expects the improvement to reduce rail accidents especially derailments, as well as to permit an increase in the speed of trains traveling south.
In order not to inconvenience passengers, Governor Prapat said not all stations will be closed at the same time, asserting that the southern rail service will still be open to travelers during the three year maintenance period.

Yes, quite common now. The old days of creosote soaked timber railroad ties is long over in most places.Lung Per wrote:Concrete sleepers? CONCRETE SLEEPERS??????![]()

Most of the rest of Thailand use concrete sleepers *except* the South as they keep getting sabotaged. It is also where you will still find cable-operated signals (very retro) for similar reasons. Terry please correct me if I'm wrong.

Unreal.....they are going to spend some money on the railway infrastructure, no way.
Snouts will be in the troughs shortly as the SRT is one of the worst cases of corruption and piggies in charge.......generally hopeless in every way.
Forgive my cynicism.

It's been colour light signaling all the way to Chumpon since 1992 (It was that project that first brought me to LOS) - semaphore after that as far as I know.VincentD wrote:Most of the rest of Thailand use concrete sleepers *except* the South as they keep getting sabotaged. You're probably right about the sleepers too.

Keep your eyes peeled for signs of building in the design requirement for the Chinese high speed link!
Had enough of the trolls. Going to sleep. I may be some time....
Re: Southern rail service from Hua Hin to receive major face
Concrete sleepers have been used for over 100 years and since world war II, concrete sleepers have always been used in railroad construction. So nothing new!

I wouldn't hold your breath on any of the so called High Speed train projects - decisions have to be made at cabinet level - and since there is only a caretaker government at this time, said decisions are on the slow tracks right now........Korkenzieher wrote:Keep your eyes peeled for signs of building in the design requirement for the Chinese high speed link!

Snouts in the Railway Trough SRT springs to mind but wouldn't it be something to have a train that travels faster than the bus don't derail and have a nice Buffett car with wifi I really am dreaming now.

Bolts pulled from southern tracks
http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... ern-tracks
SONGKHLA - Railway workers have reinstalled 200 track bolts found missing from the southern line in Thepha district on Saturday.
...............................................................
If the rest of the ties are anything like the one in the photo, the "bolts" probably fell out!

Re: Southern rail service from Hua Hin to receive major face
unless they change the width, it cant be related to the Chinese high speed link as Thailand Is only 1m gauge as opposed to the 4ft 8 1/4 as used by most of the rest of the world. 1m (imho) is way too narrow for a high speed railway.
Will the upgrade change the line to be dual track? that would help freight and passengers.

Re: Southern rail service from Hua Hin to receive major face
Regardless of what happens, there is sure to be months of rationalization and argument that 1 meter width is the Thai way.

One meter works for Malaysia. Who wants to go faster than 160 kph anyway?
