Police to be deployed around Klai Kangwon Palace on Coronation Day
As the annual Coronation Day is approaching, a number of police will be deployed around the Klai Kangwon Palace to ensure safety during the celebration.

Around 1,000 police officers and traffic police will be deployed and stationed in various areas around the Klai Kangwon Palace in Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province; in a bid to provide safety and convenience for the public who will be celebrating the Coronation Day, which falls on May 5th, 2014, during which HM the King will grant an audience to the royal family and civil servants.

According to authorities, roads in front of Klai Kangwon Palace will be sealed off from 3 pm onwards on May 4th. However, two areas will be designated as parking spots, one in the north and the other in the south of the palace.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej was crowned King of the Kingdom of Thailand on 5 May 1950 at the Royal Palace in Bangkok.

A bit of a damp squib

Went down to the shore to watch, and catch a few rays. Sure enough, 5 of the guard ships were doing figures of 8, but we didn't hear a squeak out of any of them.

Why would they do it today anyway when the anniversary is on the 5th? Maybe they re-thought and will do it on Monday. Pete

Possibly just a dress rehearsal today then. Mind you, the 2 ships at the back were really struggling to keep up, so probably needed the practice.

Sitting in the sun was nice though 8)

Would you believe a well spoken Thai asked me what coronation day meant. Was it the day the King married the Queen?

I've actually heard that from a couple of Thais (not particularly well spoken) in the last couple of days, so I've been wondering if the two events are tied in any way.

Thanks Pete - that's close enough to answer some of the confusion. There have been a couple of things happening at 19 Rai in the last week leaning towards celebration of a wedding anniversary, so that's why.

Did that well spoken Thai ask you that in Thai or in English ???
"Coronation" is not a common word for Thais, even if they speak average English, but all Thai know what วันฉัตรมงคล is...

I don't know if it's there at the moment but a few years ago the Thai Navy re-commissioned an ex-USN World War II destroyer, HTMS Pin Klao, for use as a training ship and for firing Royal salutes.

The ships were a long way off shore, but I don't think she was one of them. The 2 lead (big) ships looked quite modern.
