Luxury train derails, 2 injured

Post by PeteC »

Wow! You pay that kind of money for a once in a lifetime trip and you don't expect this. Too much excitement, memories and tales to tell I think!

"State Railway of Thailand staff inspect the derailed carriages of the Eastern & Oriental Express train, a luxury service operating between Singapore and Thailand, after it jumped tracks near Sa Kosi Narai....."

I know that stretch of line and even by Thai Railway's standards it is very poorly maintained

When I first heard about it yesterday morning I started Googling to try to find a news link. I was quite surprised how many rail accidents there had been in that area.

I think the article mentions "rotting timber sleepers". That's the first problem and in this climate they really need to be replaced with concrete. They've probably been in place for decades.

Second problem is the SRT as we know. Knee jerk and nothing proactive. Maybe the new man in charge will do better. Fingers crossed.

We were on the road that runs parallel to the line with the bikes late last year and you could see without stopping that some of the sleepers were in a dreadful condition.
