German Bar Owner Murdered On Koh Samui Island

German Bar Owner Murdered On Koh Samui Island
SURAT THANI — A group of Thai teenagers allegedly stabbed a German bar owner to death this morning on the popular tourist island of Koh Samui.
Police say the 46-year-old German man was an owner of 99 Beer Bar on Chaweng Beach, one of the island's well-known entertainment districts.

According to witnesses, the deceased and his Thai girlfriend were in the parking lot of a nightclub on Chaweng Beach when they encountered three teenagers sitting and drinking alcohol on the German's motorcycle.

The German man reportedly became angry and began arguing with the teenagers. The three Thais lost their temper, punched the German in his face, beat him with beer bottles, and stabbed his neck with shards of glass, witnesses said.

The suspects fled the scene after the attack, witnesses told police. Medical workers say the victim died from stabbing wounds.
Police in Koh Samui say they are investigating CCTV footage from the area of the crime scene to identify and arrest the three suspects.

Dangerous part of Samui at that time of night and the usual MO, Thai teens that are drunk and on a 'hair-trigger' late at night beligerently lounging all over someone else's property.

I'm surprised the German guy got angry and gave them shit in that situation.......to me that situation has red flags all over it, should have just got the Mrs to call the cops as they would have been down there sharpish.

The thing that always surprises me about these teens now everywhere is the sheer indifference they have towards everyone to the point that they will seriously injure or kill anyone who says anything and are on such a short fuse (especially if 'face' related). I even see it at universities I have worked in, the sheer contempt for class and that it's nothing more than something they have to go through to get their worthless degrees and they see it as no different than going into a 7-11 and buying a pack of crisps.....pay the university the fees and you get a degree (I don't have to actually try, do I?).

The youth everywhere (not just Thailand) are out of control. I've got a solution or two for it but they would be deemed politically incorrect by the 'La La Land' brigade.

You are spot on Spitfire. Very sad and shocking to kill someone over a minor argument but it does happen too often. Having lived here 20 years, the golden rule is not to get into arguments with the locals, especially the men. I have seen it so many times and I have always avoided confrontation here no matter how much you are in the right. Would be the best piece of advice I would give to anyone just arriving here.

Cocain, speed, ice and other drugs are known to give users a short fuse. The victim should have known better. Agree with Spitfire.
Sorry for the loss. It could have been avoided.

A very sad way to die. Avoid arguments at all costs....some guidebooks even advise be very carefull when going for a night on the town with Thais you dont know well.
When nosy expats ask how can i live here without working, i reply, 'well, while you worked hard for 50 years, i worked smart for 5 years' :D

Very sad story. Reminds of something i have read in a travel guide about germany once: never lean against or even touch a car of a stranger, they might get very upset.
So the "not touch a germans vehicle" rule and the "don't argue with drunk thais" rule seem to have crossed each other here.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there!

The Chaweng Beach area of Samui is a real dump, lots of bars, backpackers, bums, punks, juvenile delinquents etc.

That may well be true....but we aren't in Germany and that is what tourists/expats have to remember.

If those scumbag Thai kids were in Germany and pulled that crap then they might well have been on the end of a hiding or would have been nicked before it even happened.

Have to remember where you are and overtly implementing your European ways in countries such as this is often not the best policy if there is opportunity for conflict [especially with these types from the article]....even if you are right.

And, don't get me wrong, I would be annoyed if some drunken PoS was lounging in the back of my pickup when I returned to it after taking my Mrs somewhere for a meal or drink too, but I wouldn't confront him (especially if more than one) these days as you just don't know who you are interacting with and couple that with the volitility of so many now (especially the youths).

At that time of night, in that place in the OP report, with 3 wasted Thai teenage males being the problem and you get pissed-off....well, what could go wrong?

A lesson to learn for all newcomers in this, I think. Some people are charmed by all the positives to the point where they deny/dismiss the possibilities of the negatives when they are very real all the time. Many forget how dangerous these places can be, especially at night in entertainment areas and beach resorts as they are a magnet (as Name Taken said) for all the garbage that doesn't want to work, wants to get high, rip-off tourists, generally leech or try to get a easy existance through criminality etc. etc. etc.

An earlier poster talked about none-confrontation being one of the keys to longevity here......quite right.

Chaweng Beach and Samui in general has been overdeveloped and that overdevelopement just attracts more and more idiots, backpackers, bums, swindlers and trash, imo.

Looks like the three teens have been caught now, cops got them at a noodle shop nearby, 17 year old was caught with a 15cm knife and the other two were 14 and 15 years old. May they rot in jail.

For the whole report........

Three young teenagers with the collective age the same as the victim. It's a stark reminder not to get into an argument with the locals no matter how young they are can turn deadly.
