Hua Hin hit by mass of sea nettles

Post by PeteC »

".....Authorities are clearing masses of sea nettles from Hua Hin beach after hundreds of thousands were swept into the beach by the tide......The stinging jellyfish appeared in large numbers in the sea from Saphan Pla, the busy local fishing pier, to the adjacent Khao Takiab beach and many of them washed ashore late on Wednesday....."

I was going to comment on this yesterday as I took a walk on the beach around 3.30 pm and I wondered why there were 10 times as many jelly fish as usual, hundreds of small silver fish and lots more debris than usual. I did take a few photos on my phone as it was an usual sight similar to the one in Bkk post so I won't bother uploading.

They don't look small either!!

What kind of a sting would these guys give you? I certainly won't forget being stung by a Portuguese man-of-war some years back whilst swimming in ocean....... a rather painful experience to say the least.

Looking at the video again, I think that is just down the coast at Khao Tao  , but I'm led to believe Hua Hin itself was the same.

I did some research today and unfortunately found that only the deep diving "leatherback" sea turtles eat jellyfish as their main source of food. The gulf has few of them apparently, and much more of the sea grass/kelp eating greenbacks which are much smaller. A few others also, all of which are seriously endangered in the Gulf and not jellyfish eaters.

A bounty to harvest but nothing to do it...except perhaps some sharks, crabs etc., scavenging. Pete

the largest one i saw today was 18" across... thousands of them during a two hour walk south along the beach and plastic gargage everywhere... the beach is filthy.

Its obviously another incentive to visit LOS,get a wrist band when entering, and the local hospitals will know your details when stung by a jellyfish.

I've just been down to the beach at Soi 77 to take a look. I didn't see a single jelly fish, but the rubbish at the tide line was disgusting.

People were swimming, so I guess the problem has decreased.

I was there today, well soi 75, and didn't see any rubbish line.

Still enough jellies in the sea today to warrant not going in; which is a shame because the sea water appears to be the clearest I've ever seen in Hua Hin!

I'm not doubting you at all Pleng, but isn't it strange how we looked in almost the same place, yet saw completely different things :?

I guess it had something to do with tide state - I was there about 1pm (high tide today was 13:33). What time were you there?

Well I was down the beach from Marrakesh to the posh Spa. Was like a rubbish dump and hundreds of dead fish and jellyfish. That was about 9.30 this morning.

Yes, I suspect Pleng was probably down there a bit earlier also. Probably a lot hidden by the top of the tide. No doubt it's all visible again now.

It's quite amazing, but there were quite a few people in the water. I hope they weren't stung - something I've always escaped, but every other member of my family here hasn't been so lucky.
