Hundreds left stranded as Pranburi River bursts banks

Post by buksida »

The Pranburi River burst its banks in tambon Huai Sat Yai, in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Hua Hin district yesterday, destroying check dams and bridges and stranding hundreds of villagers.

It took soldiers from Thanarat Camp's Infantry Centre three hours to build a temporary crossing made from bamboo to rescue the villagers.

"The problem is that we can't remove all the debris and twigs blocking water flow under the check dams," their commander Maj Noppadon Timtanom said.

"We tried using divers to remove the debris but it was dangerous so we have to think of another option," he said.

Since this happens every year, authorities should consider building a stronger bridge here, he said.

"We're concerned about tambon Bueng Nakhon further downstream river as well," he said.

Kui Buri National Park in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Pa La-oo waterfall of Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi were closed to tourists yesterday until further notice.

Storms are battering Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces, causing flooding in many districts including Kui Buri, Sam Roi Yod and Hua Hin.

So - every year - prior to the rainy season, why doesn't some intelligent chap clear out the debris and twigs that block the water flow under the check dams?

Or is that too bleeding obvious.. :banghead:

Wow  just watching the damage on Thai news - these dams are much larger than I had imagined.

You wouldn't get me on that temporary bridge.
