Thailand already bailing out on ASEAN obligations

Post by Spitfire »

Funny........Thais already don't like something and it's a case of "No, not that bit."

There will be an increasing number of articles like this one in the BBK Post where the Thais will swipe aside what they don't like. This one is about foreigners investing in big farm plantations and the Thais are getting the shits about the land, plus having delusions of the big evil foreigners doing a land grab.

There could be a land grab but it would be by Thais (not foreigners) who would then lease it out at high prices to investors/companies.

Notice the bit in the report about labour professionals being able to cross borders for work easily......that's going to end up being a problem when Thai engineers start losing out on jobs in Thailand because they have no language skills, for example.

Get ready for the lame excuses and I wonder if they will actually implement anything at all.

:agree:
The average Thais refusal to learn English is going to make it next to impossible for this new Association of Southeast Asian Nations to succeed.
Thailand is supposed to be an important economic hub in this new ASEAN and 90% of Thais don't speak English  , it will certainly be interesting to see how things play out if and/or when this new ASEAN goes into effect.
Personally, I think this new ASEAN is going to be a complete DISASTER! if it becomes a reality.

Many local companies already adopt a 'locals only' employment policy. While many locals may express interest in learning English, how many of them would really use it, and given that the locals trying to teach English struggle with it already it's probably doomed from the start.I dabbled with teaching English at a computer school over twenty years ago, and saw how some students would not have the opportunity to use English at work (shop assistant, KFC/McDs..) Job market is by and large in the hands of Recruitment companies so this narrows down the field. You'll have the locals here wanting to go to singapore for the high salaries, discover the high pressure that goes along with it and can't wait to come back, while the singaporeans can't wait to get a job in Thailand because of the nightlife and will accept less than what they're getting back home. Malaysians will continue to sit in the middle. Not much will change. Yup, disaster sounds about right.
