Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 'probably' deflated balls
"New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was "generally aware" of a scheme to under-inflate the balls used by his team during an NFL play-off game.
A report has found some Patriots staff probably deflated balls in their 45-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
The Wells Report revealed it was "more probable than not" the Patriots deliberately used balls which were below regulation pressure limits.
It added Brady was "at least generally aware of inappropriate activities".
The NFL was investigating claims the Patriots had deflated match balls to give themselves an advantage in January's victory in Boston, which sent them to the Super Bowl.
According to reports, 11 of the 12 game balls they provided for the rain-affected match were under-inflated by about two pounds per square inch, consequently giving Brady more grip in the cold and wet conditions."
OK, so if an unfair advantage is being gained, players and teams responsible need to be punished ..... but how the hell is deflating a ball giving just the one team the advantage??!! and as the title states, New England Patriots "probably" deflated balls - the punishment therefore seems a tad harsh IMHO..... onto you Pete!

The funny part is that when it was discovered and balls re-inflated to proper pressure, Brady went on to win the game something like 46 to 7. EDIT: 45 - 7 per above....I didn't read all the post. What the above doesn't say is that it was discovered early in the game and all the New England points came after the re-inflation.
It is wrong though if all the people involved conspired to do it. Brady and at least two team staff involved, and maybe others as well. New England has had some other problems with the "rules" historically so I'm not surprised to see the NFL do what they're doing. Brady has appealed so not the end of the story yet. Pete

Again though, why would deflating the ball only give Brady the advantage and not the opposing Quarterback the same..? All seems a bit strange to me - but then again, I'm Welsh!

prcscct wrote:^ Makes no difference. They look at it as "a rule is a rule..." Ball right air, helmets standard, spikes on shoes standard...on and on and on.
That I can understand. What I don't get is why the Patriots would do it - I just don't see what clear advantage it gives them.
As an aside, I'm assuming from this that the "home team" are responsible for the supply and quality of the balls - is there not a 3rd party involved?

I have read somewhere that each team have their own set off balls,so only Brady played with the deflated balls.
I know nearly nothing about NFL but I think they change the rules back in 2006 if I remember correct
Yes, me too and haven't looked it up. Perhaps each team brings it's own balls under current rules. When the score is something like 3-0 when the ball under inflation was found, and NE then won 45-7 with properly inflated balls, it all comes down to "rules are rules" as said above.
