Thai maps for a UK Satnav

Post by Dannie Boy »

Having borrowed a Satnav from BB earlier this year for a couple of trips into Bangkok, I decided it would be a good idea to buy my own Satnav on a recent visit to the UK and then install the Thai maps when I got back here. It should be relatively straightforward but despite having attempted to do it about five times without success I thought I'd ask if anybody knows of a place it Hua Hin where I could take my Satnav and get them to do it - it's a TomTom Go50.

I had to uninstall the UK ones first as there was not enough capacity, then it was straightforward

Where is it all going wrong DB. Is it the installation, or it doesn't work after installation?

The reason I ask is mine didn't work when I got to Thailand. I had to go into my Tom Tom account account, and tell it I was in Thailand. As you know, it's been perfect ever since.

I know that Davy B has loaded his recently - might be worth a PM if all else fail.

My Tom Tom has both UK and Thai maps.

It's trying to purchase the map that's the problem. I set my account up and have linked the sat nav to the account. When I registered it, there are a number of drop down countries but Thailand isn't there so I put in the UK, but when I try to buy the Thai maps it says you are registered in another country.

Definitely talk to Davy B - he had exactly that problem. I can't remember how he overcame it.

If I remember Thailand specifically wasn't there it was a map of South Asia or something like that.

Correct, Thailand is one of a number of counties bundled up in the SE Asia pack you need to purchase, but I couldn't get to purchase it the way my account has been set up.

I've sent a pm to Davy B so hopefully he will be ble to tell me if/how he overcame the problem

Thailand is a specific map on Tom Tom. I have it, and I know Davy B has downloaded it this year. Our devices are of the simpler variety.

Maybe your Tom Tom is too advanced for the map.

For sure when I try to buy the map for my TomTom, it lists regions and then the closest you get is a group including Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia etc as one group. I doubt I will ever need the adjoining countries, but Thailand is not offered as a stand alone (for my model). All I need now is to be able to buy the damn thing.

Thai maps for a UK Satnav

Post by Felipesed »

There is a site, gpsunderground.com, that specialises in information on all manner of gps devices.
The map you require is also available for download from that site. You will need to register first.
It is a good source of technical information.

Just to clarify a couple of things - see screenshot taken a few minutes ago:

- You will see there is a Thailand map (can't be purchased because it's already installed on my device).

- You will see the location of UK and Thailand maps shown as being on my device.

Davy B is definitely your answer. As I said, he overcame your exact same problem a couple of months ago.

 Have you tried re-registering a new account as living in Thailand and attaching your device to the new account?

DannieBoy, might a VPN to the UK be the most simple answer if the TomTom site is picking-up your location?

Re the latest advice I did try registering using my wife's email address but that didn't work, but I have one more email address I can use so could try again. I don't have a UK VPN so don't know how I could try that option. If all else fails, I might try the third floor at MV and see if anybody there can provide a solution. I've PM'd Davy B but waiting his response.
Thanks to all

If you're anywhere near Soi 88, I'm happy to hook your Nav to my machine and we can give it a go with my UK VPN, it's up to you. I'm not sure what the MV crew can do but I'm happy to help out if possible. I'll PM you my number.
