I am counting down the five weeks 'til I arrive in HH for a 3 week vacation. For the middle week, I want to take a look down Phuket way to see Krabi and Phi-Phi islands and just do the normal tourist-traveller things, hopefully avoiding getting ripped-off....
Can anyone advise as to the best transport option HH to Krabi - bus/train ? And any "must-see" places or for that matter "must avoid" tourist traps ?!!
You can get to Krabi/Phuket from Hua Hin by overnight bus that leaves from the clocktower at around 10.30. Cost is around 350 baht. Or you can take a tourist "VIP" bus that you book in any travel agent, this bus costs double and takes a lot longer. You can also fly to Phuket direct from Hua Hin for around 3,000 baht.
Places to go: Ao Nang (Krabi) fantastic beaches (ao pra-nang, koh poda, railey), seafood, a great chill out place.
Kata beach (Phuket) a little quieter and a better beach than Patong, all depends what you're after. Koh phi phi is well developed and over touristy now but still worth a day trip from Krabi or Phuket.
Tried to book on-line for connection BKK/HH/BKK for late Dec/Jan but airport evidently closed for this period. I would be keen to know whether the airport is simply closed for a short holiday over new year, or are there deeper problems ?
The airport is closed to civilians now, the military still use it though. Not enough business, BKK Airways were running half empty planes to Samui (though hardly surprising looking at their prices).
