Meeting in HH . . .

Post by DaveT »

Well chaps, I've taken the plunge and booked some flights. I'll be in HH from August 1 to August 8th.

I intend to have a good look around the area with a view to possibly retiring there, once my business is sold.

Can't quite make my mind up whether to stay at the Hilton or Sofitel? What do you guys think?

More importantly, which bar do the regular contributors/moderators of HHAD hang out? Would love to pop in, have a good chat, drink and pick your brains.

As I live here, it's never been necessary for me to stay at either hotel, however for pure "ambience" I'd say Sofitel. It just seems to have more character than the other.

Thanks, appreciate that. There's a Hyatt too I see with Executive rooms, but that seems a little further out of town. What do you reckon to that?

I can't comment on the upscale hotels but if you're looking for a recommendation of good seafood, the ChaoLay seafood restaurant that extends out into the bay has very good food at reasonable prices. Unless it's closed down since the last time we ate there?

Found a piccy of it for you.

Any bars you'd recommend?

Dave T,
when you look for somewhere in Hua Hin to settle down to retire, I believe you will go for something a bit off centre, for several reasons. But when you come to visit for a week, I would recommend the opposite. Stay in the centre and don't waste time on tuk-tuks or motorbikes. Therefore, if you compare the five star alternatives, you should go for Hilton or Sofitel. I would go for Sofitel, for the same reason as Lomuamart.

Bars - why not just start at anyone, then stagger to the next and see what it looks like that particular evening or afternoon, and then stag... Whatever bar you're in, there should be another no more than three yards away. :?

Thanks Gutte.

I just want to make best use of the time there and minimise the mistakes, which will inevitably happen. Tallking to you guys who live there can obviously help a lot.

I'm sure I'll bump into some expats, which is what I really want to do. Want to know warts and all as they say.

I imagine if I do retire there I'll live just outside HH, but for this trip I'd rather stay in or very near the centre and take trips out.

Looks like the Sofitel then.

I understand the issue concerning the Monk article but am at a loss over the picture of the seafood resturant. Please inform me of why that was wrong?

To Dave T,
I would reckon so. I hear the Hyatt is good but a 45 min on the beach to the centre of town. Not bad these days as the tide's well out in the mornings. Only 150 or so??? for a tuk tuk back. Forget the motorcycles at night, particularly if you've had a drink.

Cheers Lomuamart.

Rather not have that much of a hike back, so think I'll go for the Sofitel.

I've sent you a PM, but it doesn't seem to have got through. Could you give me access the Night Crawler forum please? Would like to understand the nightlife in HH better.

Cheers,

Cannot beat the Sofitel, was there last year at this time. Great Hotel with a lot of History. Fantastic gardens, great pool smack on the front of the beach and central to town.

When you get fed up of all things Thai Food, they do the best Steak Sandwich you will get anywhere in Hua Hin.
We went to the Hilton for my girlfriends birthday and had a great Peking Duck on the 17th Floor at the Hilton.

As you seem to like some more upmarket places, let me recomend the Lets Sea bar (1/2 way down the beach for some late afternoon/early evening drinks), again beach front. Very upmarket (still cheap compared to the UK and Australia), but still very good.
Also in town, a bar called the Monsoon Bar, does good French/Vietnamese food.

Also I had the best Indian meal since I left England about 25 years ago in HH at a place called Maharaja's (up past the Hilton).
All of the bars that I went to in town are of varying standards, but full of some very friendly people. You will have a blast.

Unfortunately I am leaving HH on the 30th July, otherwise I could have done a quick tour around town for you.

Also I have heard good reports about a bar called Crawfords, when I was there last year, it was not quite finished, but by all accounts is well worth a visit. I will certainly be paying a visit there in the week that I am there.

Thanks Chelsea, greatly appreciated. Seems I made the right decision with Sofitel.

Great info . . Will do the walk around and see what transpires.

Shame you're leaving the day before I arrive. Maybe next time. I'm sure I'll bump into some expat Brits, Aussies and Americans which I look forward to.

Cheers,

Dave

So the seafood resturant picture was deleted because of article 15 then.
