Shabby town of Hua Hin

Post by usual suspect »

So...My mother has just left after a 3 week stay..She summed up our 'Paradise City' as a 'Shabby mess'..!
Well I for one agree with her..
Poolsuk Rd is a long patch of wasteland now, and Tourists HAVE to walk on the road because the bars/restaurants have taken over the pavement..OK if you're able to hop on & off the pavement easily...but when you are an elderly person..not good.
The whole way up to/down to the beach is an unfinished mess also..2 years of work and disruption has left an area
worse than before.. :cuss:
Then let's go down towards the fishing pier..No, let's not..it's the biggest eyesore of all...again years on from them happily getting the diggers in to flatten it all...it's still a derelict mess.
The building next to HH shopping mall now has rubbish piled up inside it..again another unfinished project..even in it's 3rd makeover.
Does anyone at HH Amphur realise how scruffy their town is..? Do they care?..I think not..! :banghead:

I walk around the city often when I'm there and I agree, the centre is a mess. I think you're supposed to do it Bangkokian style and sit in the back of a darkened window SUV staring at your telephone until you get into Blueport!

I try not to visit the centre of Hua Hin more than once a year. There is nothing there to go for. The restaurants are expensive and serve poor food. Drinks are much too expensive and the Bintabaht area can cause serious damage to your eardrums. I avoid it at all cost thus couldn't care less whether it is shabby or not.

Are you able to leave and live somewhere else or are you, for some reason, stuck here?

I didn't choose HH, it was an accident and I don't have to detail the reasons. It's not your business.

i didn't ask you if it was your choice, nor did I ask you the reasons. A simple declarative sentence from you would have sufficed. Even No/yes, would have done. Your problems are much to complicated for me to take on. Never mind, I won't interact with you again.

I'm also puzzled by this thread?

Why stay in HH?

Maybe say somewhere else is better in your opinion.

I'm curious -where else do you like?

HH certainly has changed over the years. My first visit was probably around 1992/3 as I remember driving down from Bangkok with the family and staying at the Melia (now known as the Hilton). I remember it as a quiet place; no bars at the time, and the seafood was cheap and good. The place to be was the Hua Hin night market for souvenirs and food.
These days it looks like the tourist dollar has taken over, at least in town. It is still not as hurried as in Bangkok, but prices are similar if not more. Ditto the food fare.
Enjoyed the first Jazz Festival, the town was packed and alive. It is much more muted these days.
Was last in town maybe six months ago but the charm it had is no longer there.
Shabby? Not really. Just too much construction/renovation around the bar areas in town as businesses keep changing hands. I understand the sentiments of US re his mum's comments and to a certain extent I concur.
For me, since I'm already firmly rooted in Bangkok (and have been for the last 30 odd years) I'll probably still visit, but tend to go elsewhere these days. If you like the sun and sea Chonburi and Chantaburi have a lot more quiet and peaceful places that don't cost an arm and a leg.

Why stay in HH? I stay here with my wife. Weather is good. Beach not as good as Phuket. HH is not far from Bangkok, I go regularly.
Lazy and tired to move somewhere else.

Maybe say somewhere else is better in your opinion. Yes Phuket, but too for from Bangkok

I'm curious -where else do you like?

Fair enough Europtimiste.

I first came to HH in 2016 and moved here in 2018.

In my experience, the pavement upgrades on Pekkersam Road were a big improvement, the improvements to the beach access South of the Hilton look promising but overall things are pretty much the same.
The clearance of sellers by the main Wat on Poonsuk road is currently a missed opportunity.
I blame concrete. It is a wonderful building material (as the improvements I quote testify). It has been used to its max throughout Thailand, but its outer appearance can deteriorate veryquickly.

The biggest difference I have noticed is actually the number of people in the bars, Tina's being one. I seem to remember it being packed the couple of times I went in but now its almost empty.

It has been a few years since I was in Chanthaburi, but I enjoyed it before.
Do you have any up-to-date recommendations?
How do you think that it would compare longer term to HH?

"A Shabby Mess"

Not just Hua Hin, but true of most Thai town's. They all look pretty much the same, faded dull concrete buildings with rubbish and vendors piled up on the sidewalks.
