Help! Unable to access websites

Post by dtaai-maai »

For some reason I find myself suddenly unable to access almost all my usual websites, apart from this forum and Netflix! I've rebooted the pc and the router, and the internet connection seems to be ok. Any ideas? Can't even access Google to research the problem.

EDIT: I've qalso tried different browsers, same result.

Have you run a virus check/Malware check?
Try loading the site from your Smartphone - unless like the garden or stairs you don't have one.......
Clear Cookies/Browsing History.
Try disabling any "Blockers" you may have.

Many times in the past, I've had exactly the opposite - access anything but the forum. Everytime it proved to be the ISP, and sorted itself after a couple of hours.

I used to check by tethering to my phone, where everything was fine.

Turn on your VPN and try again. If things then work properly, it's probably something local within the UK network.

Can't run virus/malware checks, haven't dowloaded the software to my new pc yet...
Can access everything on the phone (oh ha ha, pharvey! :butt: )
Have tried Opera with and without VPN, same same.
Refreshed Firefox (my usual browser), no change, can't access their support website.

Guess I'll just have to get an early lunch, watch Netflix, and keep my fingers crossed.

Cold curry and crossed fingers seem to have done the trick. Everything is magically back to normal.

Almost certainly your ISP as I suspected, and have suffered the same fate many times.

Good news! I would put a priority on getting the virus/malware stuff downloaded this weekend.

On that topic, any recommendations for the best free malware protection?

I have to leave that to BB, Buks and others. I'm a Mac guy and what I need to do is different.

Always found Avast to be good - however now using "company provided software" on both personal and company computers.

Glad you're back up and running :thumb:

I've been using Avast for some time now and very pleased with it. However I did upgrade it to the premium version. Costs about 50 quid a year. You get all the usual software but 'Cleanup' is also included. That's a great piece of software. Will check for broken links, registry problems, browser problems, outdated drivers etc etc. It will allow you to recover space by deleting unwanted items, improve performance by putting certain tasks to sleep. Something I've used quite a lot is the 'disk doctor' feature as I have an old laptop which corrupts itself from time to time.
I have it set to run when nothing else is going on. It will bring your performance back up to 100%.
