Credit Card for expats?

Post by LolaBeltran »

I need a new credit card. My VISA card with Chase is dead thanks to hackers and the absolute worst customer service department in the universe. Never seen so many formulaic replies "We will get back to you in 3 to 5 days" etc.
I applied to my US bank but immediately came up against the need for a US address. I am loath to provide one which would be false. I live here and this is my only address.
Anyone know of a US bank which would provide a credit card?
Alternatively . . .will any Thai bank issue a credit card to foreigners?
Thanks

The only way you'll get a credit card in Thailand as a farang is by depositing the amount of money you want credit for ... so it isn't really credit, more like glorified debit. Kbank provides a virtual credit card, though, which gives you all the numbers/details but not the physical card.

I've had CC's for years, now only keep one. Perhaps because I've worked all those years and paid taxes in Thailand, and my pay scale at the time qualified me for one.

I'm only a poor pensioner, but my findings were very similar to buksida's. I'd have to deposit an amount equivalent to the credit limit of the credit card, and that amount couldn't be touched so long as the card was valid. It seemed to be a ludicrous system, especially when many Thais I know have no money but have cards with stupid credit limits (usually maxed out). I basically refused the card.

Krungsri get you one in a couple of weeks but as said above you have to deposit the amount you want for credit. I think its handy for hotel booking, car rentals etc. in Thailand and I do not need to worry about my home country card getting hacked.

If your partner is Thai then UOB might offer a 'supplementary' credit card, based on your partners cc. It's how I have a Thai credit card. All I know is that this was a scheme that originated with Citibank (maybe others, I have no idea), and I had their cc for a few years, but they have pulled out of Thailand now, and UOB have taken over, so now I have a UOB credit card. I have my own card and account number, but it is linked to my partners card. I can use it in the same way as my UK cc, the only difference is, the total credit available is combined for both of us, but we haven't got anywhere near that. I had to provide evidence of my income, etc, in the usual way and obviously passport to confirm visa status.

Yes, Citibank had pulled out and UOB have taken over. With the same credit rating as before. I have been using them for over 30 years so I guess it's a legacy thing in my case. And I've ditched the local Thai banks CC's as there is no advantage to it. I was able to use the CC with no problem in The Netherlands back in the early 90's, Singapore, Taiwan..
