Keeping chickens

Post by Dannie Boy »

For many years I’ve had my own chickens for fresh eggs because I’ve never found a supplier of anything approaching similar quality. Our current (4) chickens are coming to the end of their laying days and I’m lucky to get 2 eggs a day, sometimes only 1. The people we’ve got our chickens from in the past has stopped supplying them, so does anyone know where they are available - normally we have what I would call normal chickens like below, rather than the feral type Thai ones.
Hopefully a supplier closer to Cha Am than Hua Hin.

How many have you lost to cats or other predators over the years?

It may be worth checking with either a pet supply shop, or a farm feed store. There are a couple of pet shops in Hua Hin that may know of a small breeder. Most of the supply of chickens in all forms is under the control of CP ALL. They own hatcheries but use private farms to raise them once they are old enough. Hens are also reportedly in short supply, as compared to roosters.

Ok thanks, we’ll give it a try, although my wife mentioned yesterday that our previous supplier is also asking around - there may be a source in Pranburi.

Due west of Hua Hin, in the hills a bit, try asking here, as they seem to have bunch of them. I'm in the market for about 6 of them myself. Haven't built the coop yet.

Thanks for the link - it looks a very nice place although quite a trek of almost 75 km each way for us - still if I don’t find anything else it might be worth an outing in the new year

:thumb: What I notice in the Thai news most here are chicken coops getting raided by snakes, usually pythons of various sizes. I don't see it often, but it appears from time to time. Being a "jungle" country I'm surprised there isn't more predation, but for household chickens those tall perimeter walls and lights probably scare 4-legged critters away.

My daughter raises them in California, usually 6-8 at a time for eggs. She loses one or two every few months usually to coyotes and bobcats, even when they are in their coop at night. Crafty animals! Stranger still is that she's only a 20 minute drive from the 4th largest city in the State.

In the UK, foxes are a problem although that’s not something we have out here to worry about. We have had the odd instance of snakes and lizards getting into the garden, but never suffered a loss of the chickens - having dogs no doubt helps and we do also have solar security lights.

KhunLA, are you still in need if chickens as I’ve located a farm that will supply 10 minimum and I only want 5 myself so that would leave 5 for you? Price is B220 each.

Good find, BUT, wife decided against it, as more work that she wants to put into it. She would be the caretaker of, while pointing out, we're out & about for a week or 2, a bit too often.

THANKS for thinking of me though. Have you peeked or asked on AN (aseannow / thaivisa) as may be someone in the area looking also.

Ok no probs - they are time consuming requiring daily upkeep with food, water and egg collection etc, and I don’t use any other platforms to ask there!!
