I took a visa run to Laos , so I thought I would post details ,not the cheapest way to go but you might want a change afternoon flight with air asia (mon to thurs) 399 baht plus taxes , yes thats 399 , to Udon Thani there is a bus to friendship bridge ( border) from airport 150 baht takes about 30 - 40 mins , or stay in a hotel in udon , rates are reasonable even a nice hotel with pool / disco and so on 800 baht, cross into Laos $30 U.S for visa , good for 28 days you could make it back to the airport for return flight around 5pm .
Vientiane the capital of Laos is 20 mins over the border by cheap taxi . hotels little expensive everything else same price as here , Vientiane is like a great big village not a capital city not a huge amount to see but lots of places to go along the river front , lots of French eating places , quite a number of bars
It would be possible to catch the early morning flight out 06.45 and evening flight back with no problem .
So if your sick of the bus south give it a try

I like to experience with my visa runs whenever I can. The biggest problem with Lao/Cambodia is that they require a visa and it takes a full page of your passport and so you'll end up with the need to purchase a new one sooner than you'd wish. The visa run described above sounds very nice, though and I might be tempted to do it in the future. Staying overnight in Nong Khai is also a nice option. Do they still have good quality wines for sale in Vientiane?
