Looks like it. It's on the news everywhere.
Hard to find out on the thai websites, Bangkok Post isn't working at the moment. Thairath is working but i can't read it.

I hope they won't make a mess out of it.

coup

Post by samlorsam »

Just to put your minds at rest, so far HH is as normal, quiet darts night as usual. You wouldn’t know anything is going on, friends in BKK say its quiet. TV is off, local and satellite, radio is also off.
But via the Internet, BBC world service is reporting via telephone reports.
An announcement on Thai TV has said they have introduced martial law and have overthrown the government, but importantly the coup leaders, army and police have announced that they are loyal to the King and will hold elections soon!
Lets hope it all blows over soon.
Long Live The King!

This is on The Nation website, which is still up at 40 mins past midnight....

Statement from the military reformist

The following is the statement from the miliary reform council.

There has been social division like never before. Each side has been trying to conquer another with all possible means and the situation tends to intensify with growing doubts on the administration amid widespread reported corruption.

State units and independent organisations have been politically meddled, not able to deliver their services as specified in the Constitution.

The administration is also usually bordering on "lest majest" actions against the revered King. Despite attempts from social units for compromises, there is no way to end the conflicts.

The revolution body thus needs to seize power. We have no intention to rule but to return the power to the people as soon as possible, to preserve peace and honour the King who is the most revered to all Thais.

Of course the King is safe.
The coup is not against him, it is against interests deemed detrimental to Thailand.
Thank goodness His Majesty is on the throne.

Got to go to Bangkok today, unavoidable. Apparentely there is a public holiday. Banks schools closed etc. Not sure about sky train etc. Hopefully this is a peaceful coup and the army are not going to be forming there own government. Looks like things are normal in HH school kids are getting ready for school as normal.

I have to say that the King does provide Thailand with a uniquely stabilising influence, and frankly without his existence, and the tendency of the Thai people to listen to him, the country could have really gone to crap with a coup. As it is, it looks good, though communique 4 worries me as it starts to place power in individual hands, and makes things semi-permanent, which may turn permanent. Another thaksin maybe?

I'm already in the office in Bangkok this morning, life seems to be going on as usual. Filled up gas at the station, no problem. Many of the guys are already at work - the 'holiday' was declared for the government workers and the banks, so there wasn't a lot of traffic, which was nice. It's raining anyway, so what better excuse not to go to work. I did tell the kids to stay at home, but his teacher, when asked what was happening, said he was going to school anyway. There were a couple of soldiers at one or two junctions looking quite bored. Life goes on, coup or no coup.

All the kids here in Pattaya left for school, only to return an hour later saying all is closed here.

Thaksin cancelled his UN speech and is planning to leave New York today. He has not confirmed his destination. I don't think it will be here. London perhaps where he has a home.

All of UBC is shut down except the Thai stations playing patroitic music. Cable is working as normal with BBC, DW and News Asia channels coming in loud and clear.

Watch the Baht, should be some good chances to get a very favorlable exchange in coming days. Pete
