Ranong - Minimum Monetary Requirements

Post by Heebio »

Ranong is now open again and the Burmese have reopened the border.

I'm going to do my 90 day run on Saturday but was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the possible enforcement of the minimum monetary requirements - this is not usually enforced but legally I could be required to show I have 20,000 baht CASH on me, before they'll stamp me in again for another 90 days - this only applies to Non O and B visas.

With 1 October coming up on Sunday I would imagine there maybe a few people heading down there this week sometime - any feedback regarding enforcement of the monetary requirements would be much appreciated. Last thing I want is getting refused entry because I don't have the cash on me.

By the way, the minimum legal requirement for a 30 day run is 10,000 baht.

Thanks

Heebio,

Probably a naive question, but if you're concerned, why not take the cash with you anyway?

You are talking about Thailand, and living in the place as you do, you must know that what is right today may well change tomorrow, and again the day after. The situation could even change throughout the day depending on which immigration officer is on duty at the time you pass through.

Heebio,
As you'll know, those monetary requirements have been in force for a long time, but I've never heard of a farang being asked to show the money.
Might be an idea to take your ATM card and if imm say they'll want to see 20K from you, just nip over to the bank opposite the offices and draw it out before you go over to Burma. That's what I've always been prepared to do.
I very much doubt that imm would let you go over first and not tell you of the need to see money on your return, hence stranding you in never-never land.
But you never know  Even then, I reckon an imm officer would accompany you to the ATM before giving your passport back anyway. They're all pretty friendly down there.

Heeb,

They have a listed number, or used to have a few years ago, but you will probably need to get a Thai person with you when you phone. Call Directory enquiries and ask for Immigartiom Ranong and you will get the number. I can't remember the DIR number from the top of my head but I can get it for you. Most Thais don't know it exists.

Everybody,

Has anybody actually done the Ranaong to Victoria Point trip in the last couple of days and does anybosy know what is the status with the Andaman Club, their web site is shoite.

Here's another web site with what appears to be post-coup updated information. Yes, it is a law firm/agency but their info seems detailed. Perhaps of assistance. Pete

Thanks for all your replies gents.

I've done many runs to Ranong and always via the Andaman Club pier, which does have an ATM in the immigration office.

I'm fully aware that to date the requirements have never been enforced but the reason I asked about this was because there were a few comments on another forum specifically about this, although not related to Ranong runs. In the current climate I don't think it's a bad idea to be fully aware of all possible scenarios - don't wanna get caught with my pants down.

As Guess says, any feedback from anyone doing a run sometime this week would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Yesterday's visa run went smooth as silk. If anything the whole process was quicker and more efficient then normal - and the monetary requirement was not enforced.

Lets hope it stays this way under the new immigration regime.

I am often asked my opinion on which visa run to take. When I first came to Thailand after my first run in with Ranong, I always subsequently used Andaman Club pier, never had a problem with this procedure for the remainder of my first year. Haven't been for over two years now, what with yearly visa extensions, but always recommend Andaman Club pier and everybody that has used it has been very pleased. :thumb:
