Mushy Peas

Post by lomuamart »

As requested, I'm starting this thread because I saw a can of them in my local shop, over the road, yesteday. I've got malt vinegar in the kitchen and I'm sure I can russle up some chips and eat the culinary delight whilst reading one of Uncle Rupert's sound newspapers on the internet.
Heaven. I want that can!!! I'm sure the Thai lady dosn't know what she's got in her shop.
URRRRRGH, I've just exploded at the thought.

I can't find lima beans here, one of my favorites. You cook up some lima beans, cook up a can of creamed corn, bake a potato and mix all three together into a stew concoction, with a good size slab of butter on it. My Dad used to make it so perhaps it's an Irish dish? Delicious! :D Pete

Hold on a minute, I used to work for The Daily "Success" on Fleet Steet. A sound newspaper - not- but it wasn't as bad as The Sunday Express or The Star. Shame about their circulation and readership. I want my mushy peas with vinegar in an edition of one of those.
And Pete, sorry don't know about lima beans. I'll ask the lady over the road whether she's got any and if not I'll ask her to order them. If she agrees, I'll send them over the water to you :thumb:

Too late. I've bought the one and only, last remaining can in HH
Mind you, they're called Hengleng processed peas, so I'm not sure if I've really got mushy peas.
Could mash them up though when I open the can

Nottingham style is the best

Steak pie, mushies and loads of gravy and mint sauce

Getting close in Lord Nelsons but still no mint sauce. Take your own!!!

I remember visiting the Goose Fair in Nottingham as a kid and they used to have plastic dustbins full of dried peas soaking in water to make mushy peas; they must have sold hundreds of gallons of the things.

What happens if you soak them in Scotch, or God forbid Mekong? :D Pete

Pete, I’ve never tried it, but a colleague of mine was telling me how to make Vodka Melon by cutting a hole in a melon and soaking vodka into it over a couple of days. Apparently you can get quite a lot of vodka into a melon, with predictable results. I think that would taste better than Mekong mushy peas!
