STRAY DOGS
STRAY DOGS
I'm coming out to Hua Hin for my fourth visit and am wondering if anything has been done about all the stray dogs. I feel it really lets the place down to have these dogs roaming the streets and congregating in mass up near the elephant village. I'm not an dog lover myself but to see the state of some off these animals is really up setting.
I thought the dogs inside the compound were cared for by the king's charity and the dogs out side were stray, mostly cared for by monks? What is the difference between 'a dog pound' and a 'dog rescue centre'. (Genuine question Dawn).DawnHHDRC wrote:The mass congregating near the elephant village is actually the Govt run dog pound.
STRAY DOGS
It's the dogs outside the compound that appear to be the problem, i know this is a Thailand wide problem, but does anyone know of any plans to try and curb the problem? It's a two way thing, the dogs are in such bad health and it's not what you want to see on your holidays.

Re: STRAY DOGS
Are you suggesting the dogs should be exterminated so that you can enjoy your holiday better?BOND009 wrote:It's the dogs outside the compound that appear to be the problem, i know this is a Thailand wide problem, but does anyone know of any plans to try and curb the problem? If you're talking the ones immediately outside the gate & up & down the road a bit, they are the pound dogs. They get in & out of the gate all the time. If you're talking the ones actually in the confines of Wat Etisukato, they have been abandoned by members of the public for the monks to look after or have bred there. I don't know which you're all talking about.
Jockey, in my eyes the difference between us & them is they sweep all dogs off of certain areas periodically to keep the tourists happy. Then they get dumped up there & neglected (apart from one lovely man who does everything he can for the dogs). Our dogs are taken by merit of being sick or injured. They are made well, fed well, vaccinated, neutered & cared for & loved & we try & find homes for them. If they need to catch their dogs for any reason, they need to use poles & nets (apart from the nice guy). To catch any of our dogs, I call their name & they come to me (or volunteers). This is after being with them/us for a time, obviously. Don't get me wrong, I love their dogs, some of them are lovely, they just aren't looked after well.
This is not why or how the Govt shelter was set up. It was set up with much better ideals & goals. But that is how it is day to day.
There was no point explaining this or what we do, as I get the feeling that the OP just wants the dogs out of his sight. That's not something I (or the pound) can do.
And, it's not HM the King's Charity. It's a tessadban run initiative which HM the King donated a considerable amount of money to found. As I said, it wasn't supposed to be how it turned out.
Oh, and I do know exactly what I'm talking about, as we're up there now, too & I see those dogs, play with some & try to get away with giving a few food or basic medical treatment (we're not supposed to) etc every single day.

Exactly my thought's, dogs are not stupid.STEVE G wrote:I always used to think that all the dogs in the area around the dog pound were ones that had escaped from it, but my partner tells me that they are there because, as Jockey says, they get fed by the monks.
As long as they stay there alls well. We do not seem to have this problem in Parnburi?
In some prov's they have a cull, usually just before Thai New Year.

As for your comment about Pranburi - take it you've never been to the rubbish dump or the main market, then?

Not sure why I'm bothering saying this, as it is in several different dog threads on this forum, but I'll say it again. Several extensive studies, including one by the WHO into dog overpopulation have stated categorically that sterilisation is the only permanent & effective method of population control. Sterilisation also reduces many problems such as barking, aggressiveness & dog diseases (VG, uterine & testicular cancers, pyometra, mammary cancers...)
To this end, some of you might be interested to know that HHDRC are at present collaborating with Dogchance of Bangkok/Ratchaburi. We are trying to work together to get a permanent neutering clinic established in HH. Dogchance will build & fund it, HHDRC will bring in the dogs & do the work. The idea is to establish a neuter & release programme in HH. Every 2 weeks, at least 20 (maybe a lot more, we're still talking about feasibility) dogs will be brought in from temples, beaches, streets etc. Dogs will be neutered, vaccinated, parasites killed. They will be kept for a week & released back into their territory. We hope, if things go well, we can start this programme in the 2nd half of this year.

Dawn if this come's off and you are personally involved, I hope you get granted either resisdency or a longer time to stay there with your child. Rather than having to run the gauntlet of the visa run every few months.
I have read various threads during the time that I have been a member of this board, and if there were compasionate grounds for granting a visa for you to spend quality time with your son, you deserve it. (a personal thought).
I had to go through the same thing (but as a single person not a parent) to stay in Australia, but after 25 years here and having my 1st trip back to the UK a couple weeks ago, still in the long run, think I made the correct decision to stay in Australia.
From what I have read, I think your heart is here with your son and your good works in the rescue centre.
I really hope that you never are separated from your son, as I do not think that would be in his best interests ( an opionion taken from some of your previous posts).
For all the good that you have done in the town, I hope that everthing works out for you. If it does not walk away with your head held high for what you have achieved and done for the town while you have lived there.
I am not a local, but from what I have seen in posts about what you do in the towm, if I ever ride a moped or bike in HH , my ankles might be safe from having lumps chewed out of them
