I was talking to someone today who's dog (in europe), nearly died of heart worm. When I asked the symptoms I am now worried my faithful friend may have heart worm. It is carried from mosquitos. Could anyone advise me of a vet who could diagnose this properlyas it seems quite complicated to find out for sure. I got the following from the web:
The diagnosis of canine heartworm disease depends upon the following: an accurate patient history, the recognition of varied clinical signs, and the use of several diagnostic procedures that may include X-ray (radiology), angiography and ultrasound (echocardiography), blood (serological) testing, microfilarial detection and differentiation, clinical laboratory tests and, in the worst case scenario, examination after death (necropsy).
Basically, I am asking if anyone knows of a good vet who could confidently diagnose heart worm?

Just phoned my vet, Jockey. He says he can do a blood test at his clinic, 95% accuracy, takes 10 minutes to get the result.
We have successfully treated 2 dogs for heartworm, both are still fine today.
Our vet has a clinic on Soi 55/1, "The Pet Hospital". Phone 032 530213.

The vet also speaks very good English and they're open 24/7 for emergencies.

The jabs you refer to barrys are all-purpose anti-parasite ones, usually containing Ivermectin (Ivomec, Fenomax or another brand name). Not only do they kill heartworm, they kill fleas, lice, ticks, mange mites & intestinal worms (some varieties). The amount of time they last is different for each parasite, though. For mange, the dog needs them weekly until clear, for ticks & fleas they last about 6 weeks to 2 months. A couple of months ago I brought some flea collars back from Europe for some of the dogs in the village, and although it took a while, it seems they do work in stopping ticks and fleas. Does anyone know if there are any long term problems with using these, or can you use them all the time? If they are harmless I was thinking of bringing more of them over for the rest of the dogs.
