racist hoteliers in hua hin?

Post by seasides »

when i picked up the fresh kung at the beach from the fisherman this morning, a thai lady in her mid-30s was there, eager to start some english conversation.

she was able, she said, to sometimes rent one of those old villas situated along the beach here in hua hin. if she's not able to get that old villa of her friend, she said, her family would go to a hotel.

but, she said, its becoming more and more difficult for a thai to get a decent hotel in hua hin.

she had tried to book the railway sofitel during high season. sorry, she was told, they'd only give rooms to foreigners at that time.

another time, when she had got a room at the sofitel and wanted to have lunch in her swimming suit, she'd been told to properly dress up. at tables besides though farangs in swimming suits were having there lunches.

she didnt look like making up the story. why should she. we had a pleasant conversation. actually i believe her.

go figure why there are certain anti-foreigner sentiments in thailand.

its just a story, but a story of a longtime guest here in hua hin, of a thai longtime guest - who doesnt feel welcome anymore. and is still very polite towards foreigners, as i could tell.

Well Seasides

High season is that time of year where Thais treat Thais as second class people sometimes. In my four years @ that University way inside Palm Hills. I have a lot of friends finishing with a Bachelors degree in Hotel & Tourism Admin. some of them used it to take a plunge into the Hotel and Toursm market abroad and a few are still working in Hua Hin area.
As from what I heard what my friends and fellas where telling me when ever a certain occupancy percentage has been reached them Hoteliers only rent out to foreigners. and no Thai's can rent the rooms.
As for breakfasts and brunches are concernded. the reason why this woman is not allowed with her normal clothes inside was probaby inside the Poolside restaurant where a lot of Farangs and Thai Highs Society They want to keep for themselves and sometimes do subtle trashtalk to other people who are not their status. I got those 'Insider' information from a few friesnds who are working @ Anantara Resort and one friend who has risen up the ranks and now is the Assistant Supervisor of Chivasom Hua Hin!

Bathing attire

I have heard many stories to this affect and witnessed it once. I have also heard stories the other way around too.

As to being dressed for dinner. I have many times visited the Sofitel for food and drink and all people are asked to dress accordingly. While I was there one day a guest of the hotel (a rather large European lady) came to have brunch in her bathers and was politely told that she could not be served unless she went a dressed properly.

racist hoteliers

quite a sad state of affairs. its not right & it will cause anti foreigner sentiments for sure.not sure if racism (an overused word in my opinion) is the root cause.more that if the face fits. there are plenty of thais that stay at the better hotels. class distinction isn't only a trait of western society.
as for the dressing up, i think thats a rule that should be applied across the board in restaurants/bars, not only in thailand.by that i mean at least put a pair of shorts & a t shirt on.
its acceptable around the pool or on the beach, not everyone wants to be surrounded by semi clad, quite often overweight farangs whilst they're eating?

You know, most places on Khao San Road in Bangkok won't let Thais stay.

Here's a funny related story. I was on Koh Samui with my Thai girlfriend a couple of years ago. I had a plane ticket, but she had come with friends, and was returning to Hua Hin by bus.

We went to book the bus ticket for her, and asked how much the ticket was. We were told, "If it's for him, it's 550 baht, if it's for you, it's 650 baht". They were charging Thais more than farangs.

I assume this is because, when they deposit you at the overpriced "VIP" bus station/restaurant, for hours at a time, Thais won't pay 100 baht for khao pat gai.

Dear Mablethorbe,

You have a realy good point there. Let me give you a related tale.

The **** river kwai resort is now managed by a danish guy. Before it was thai management and the price for thai was half the the price for farangs.

Now with the new manager it is the other way around. Price for a floating rooms is 450 B for falang and 900 B for thai. Why......Thais sleeps 9 in a room for 4 and do not spend money in his retaurant....

every business hurts itself with double pricing systems.

i for myself refused to go to national parks here where i'd had to pay a multiple of the entrance fees my wife and son had to pay.

got papers now that allow me to pay the local price, but anyway, if greed and not service culture is the higher motive it trickles down to the very essence of your business: your customers.

once negatively surprised you'll spread a negative opinion.

the sofitel should cater for the thai clientele to fill its empty spaces during the low season! but when they're not good enough in the high season, why should they support that elitist hotel in the low season?

shame on such double standards.
