We're looking at taking a trip to Kanchanaburi to see the sights and to take in the tiger temple. Has anyone been recently who can give any comments as to whether its worth the drive? And any clues where is good to stay for the night? It's not a bit of the country we've been to yet, so any helpful comments are much appreciated.
Cheers
Jim
Tiger temple
It's certainly worth a trip and not too long a drive. Cheapest places to stay are in the small bar area. When you get to the 'Bridge over the River Kwai', turn left and a a kilometre or so down the road there is a small bar/restaurant/farang area. You can get some quite reasonable rooms there with UBC, aircon etc. Also easy for the restaurants for farang or Thai food.
If you like tigers, want to touch a tiger, want to smell and be close up with a (many) tigers, then it's absolutely worth the trip.
Even if the smell of unmentionable body odours can be somewhat staggering it's worth the trip.
The tigers are not alone, you will find all kind of ruminants there as well.
When I went there, I spent the night in Kanjanaburi before we next day drove off to see the Hellfire Pass further north-west.
On the way back we stopped at the Wat Luang Thaa Mahaa Boa to see and touch the tigers.
A hair raising experience I must add.
Deep down in a ravine, you and 8 tigers.
Very - very hot, it's a sweat out but still a chilly moment!!!

I intend to live forever - so far so good.
