Buffalo Tavern

Post by JD »

Popped in for a pint last night. Gotta say it’s a nice looking, fresh, English style pub. Quite a few Hua Hin regulars already seem to found the place judging by the number of ex-pats there last night. Draught John Smiths and the Barbecue Ribs are both very more-ish. Owner says it still has a little bit more work to do, didn’t notice myself, a nice, pleasant, mid-week couple o’ pints and good grub, in an English Pub atmosphere. I will call in again sometime soon. :thumb:

OK, I'm just going by the name & the location (someone else mentioned). Is this anything to do with Bill?

Just had a Sunday roast at BB's

Very good - roast beef, yorks, roast potatoes, fresh veg including cauliflower cheese, green beans, cabbage and turnip. Served with extremly hot gravy

Very impressed and I'm full

I'll be back!!

I was there on Xmas Day evening, great atmosphere, very good (cold) beer, and lot's of good expat company to keep the conversation and the beer flowing.

Thanks Bill for a good night.

Had a bevvy or three in there last night, most impressed, good atmos, very spacious, nice selection of brews - HH needs more places like this.

Taste buds left wanting ....

Post by smiles »

To throw a wrench into the works . . . we went to Buffalo's last week with the desire for fish and chips, and to introduce my Thai partner to the quaint English pub thing.

70's pop (maybe 60's) music blaring from the speakers in the ceiling (had to ask them to turn it down, which they did). Mosquitoes buzzed around our feet. Only 2 ceiling fans (of many) working in the sticky evening heat. But those things were minor:

Fish and chips (mine) were undistinguished ~ and very lonely on the plate. The fish (advertised as from some icy fiord up Norway way) was decently cooked (batter was just 'OK') but it was totally tasteless.
Maybe I've become accustomed to 'taste' in my food in many trips to Thailand, but fresh fish & chips should still not taste like, well, frozen fish and chips.
The chips were spectacularly mediocre, crinkle cut in the frozen manner ... were they or weren't they? Never asked.
The price was high for what we got on the plate ... IMHO.

My friend had 'something chicken' (can't remember the item now) which was also (and this is the worst thing a Thai can say about food in general) " ... no have taste ... ".

Came outta there disappointed with no desire to return. Spent about 1100 baht (2 drinks) when frankly, could have chosen to go to Lek Leks on the railway road (the best Panang Goong going) or Friend House just a few steps off Sa Song Rd for fresh sea bass all for 300 baht for 2.

Cheers ...
Just one more reason why I love living in Thailand ...

TERRIBLE SINGER

Post by nevets »

I went all the way down there to get a nice dinner and did not go in side because of the terrible English singer on the mike. Went to JW instead.

Tasteless, overpriced fish and chips with Karaoke! All you need now is a group of bleach-blonde adolescent girls falling over on happy hour Bacardi Breezers and you have recreated the true British pub experience; I’ll have to give it a try sometime.

We try to do our best

Post by (buffalo) Bill »

Well in response to my unhappy customers, firstly Nevets, that terrible English singer was me the infamous Buffalo Bill on the mike. I don’t profess to be a singer but, and there is always a but, the two Thai entertainers we had employed for the Saturday and Sunday were even worse than me. Needless to say they only worked for 1 hour out of what should have been a 5 hour shift and they were not asked to return on the Sunday. We are still looking for some entertainment so if you could help out you are more than welcome to come and see if you or anybody you know can do any better but remember you have to have a work permit.

In general isn’t it funny that was nearly 2 weeks ago and it takes somebody else’s complaint to give people the get up and go to jump on the band wagon to complain.

Dear smiles what was throwing a spanner in the works?
Let me take each complaint at a time, was the music really blaring? I won’t argue with you but I will say this; I could not have been there at the time as I would not allow music to be blaring and also my dear mother in-law is staying with us at the moment and most evenings she is sat with my wife and I in the bar area and she would not allow this believe me.
Are mosquitoes endemic to Thailand? You could have asked one of our English speaking staff for some repellent, we offer this free at the bar, but if you don’t speak English maybe your girlfriend could have asked one of our Thai speaking staff to turn on one of our many ceiling fans. If I had been there you could have asked me to start the air conditioning.
Now to the undistinguished Fish and Chips. The Fish arrives frozen in filleted 7oz loin pieces all the way from Norway. As for tasteless, what can I say? It arrives frozen, then we thaw the fish season and batter it, deep fry it and then wrap it in newspaper just as you would get it in the UK. The chips are not frozen, but hand cut from selected potatoes and with this comes a home made pickled onion, home made Tartar sauce and mushy peas. It is very rare to receive a complaint such as yours as many people (especially expats) come back often for this dish.
Can I ask what was the drink you had as IMHO,1,100 Baht sound very expensive for our Fish and Chips and something Chicken with only two drinks, please let me know.

I don’t personally know LEK LEK’s or My Friends, but I would think they are Thai restaurants, let me tell you there are different overheads involved.

We value your custom and also your constructive criticism and I would like to ask you to return to The Olde Buffalo Tavern and let us make amends by allowing me to offer you our Fish & Chips cooked by me personally and free of charge (my bill).

Bill.......Cheers.

Very refreshing to see an owner responding in this manner. If I could just add my twopence worth?

I would just like to say that the BBQ spare ribs, with mashed potato, would have to be up with the best that I have had. The service from your staff was exemplary, even from the girl that bought somebody else`s drink to my table!

BUT, could you please do something about those stupid little round stools at some of the tables? They are not high enough (typical Thailand problem), and very uncomfortable to sit on while trying to eat a meal.
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!
