Interior Minister Chalerm Yubamrung is set to close down 29 websites, which are accused of containing information that refers to the high institution in improper ways.
The move came after Democrat party revealed information about the sites.
Mr Chalerm said the closure of these sites needs to be done so authority can probe them thoroughly.
He insisted that security laws would allow Interior Ministry to track down to the publishers of the sites.
He added that the move does not interfere the work of the Information and Communications Technology Ministry as the matter directly involves national security.

Thought: Just like the old days under Toxin with websites disappearing and the press being sued ... welcome back freedom of speech.

I just think it's mostly down to ignorance. That is the ignorance of the "powers that be" towards the internet.
They never seem to be "internet savvy" and sometimes just view the whole thing as a threat to their positions. Especially as they find it difficult to control.
Remember the deadhead minister who was responsible for all of this a few years ago? He seemed to take great pride in the fact that he never used the internet except to check golf scores and had two email accounts, but found it easier to use the phone. He never seemed to understand what all the fuss about the internet was. Essentially, he didn't understand it and had no intention of even trying to.
It seems to me that it will make no difference in this country who are in power. As long as the "old guard", 75 year olds, who should have been put out to pasture donkey's years ago, keep getting elected, this country won't move forward.
Far better that the people in charge stick to their fortune tellers and animism that actually embrace the modern world?
Rant over.

I read a similar report in The Nation and that listed some of the sites....the ones listed were all named like www.thaksincomehome.org and www.welovethaksin.net etc..... basically TRT/PPP militant sites.
The stated reason in the Nation's clearer english is that all the sites fall well foul of the lesse majeste law as they publish muck on the Privy Council and palace institutions.
This isn't web censorship as much as another round of pathetic political point scoring while the country goes to ratshit. TIT
