Unofficial HH Competition

Post by iagra »

Hi again. Recent posts about lime pickle – and similar previous posts – reminded me of an occasion last year when I got chatting to an English expat. A friend of his approached, tightly clutching a plastic bag, the contents of which I was told most expats would kill for. Not quite knowing what to expect, I peered inside, and discovered four jars of stuff from home – ASDA English mustard, horseradish sauce, can’t remember the other two, but I caught the drift.
Which led me to think of this (not altogether) altruistic idea: Think of something readily available in a UK supermarket which is difficult/impossible to obtain in HH, and I will do my very best to bring some with me when I arrive in HH on July 13.
For now, I will guess that I might have room for perhaps 5 separate items in my luggage (oatcakes, Branston Pickle, etc, up to you) and am prepared to swop them on my arrival for a beer or two. If necessary, I will choose the (5?) lucky recipients on the basis of how persuasive/entertaining/interesting/passionate/desperate/elegantly written the request is, and if IMHO there is a clear winner, no beer will be required.
It strikes me as a fun way to meet some of my future neighbours, and I must admit that there are one or two things I would probably kill for when I finally make the move, eg a tin of smoked paprika from Sainsburys.
Let’s see how it goes – closing date for posts in this thread, announcement of winners etc TBA.
Regards, Ian.

I love the life in Thailand,
The sun, the smiles, the beer.
But god I miss my Branston.....
Y' just cant get it here.
A sarnies not the same y see,
Without its tangy kiss.
Of all the things from Blighty....
Its the only thing I miss!

I'm not sure it's exactly all over the place (and it would have been more helpful to say where, Richard!), and it's one of the things I asked a friend to bring with him from the UK a few months back, but I did buy some Branston's fairly recently at JD's place (or should that be 'palace')... along with a few other goodies from home!
This is the way

What a lovely idea iagra, however we've just got back from our bi-annual visit to the UK and I've got two huge jars of Branston pickle just waiting for the price of cheese to go down! If I was desperate I could have possibly been persuasive and entertaining to get what I want.

Ok, Branston Pickle was just my kind of metaphor for strange farang food cravings, and not only is it apparently widely availablbe, but VS has enough to supply all of Hua Hin for several months.
(Shame for sandman, since his deft use of light verse would have made him the instant overall winner, but in the light of what I now know I must exclude Branston Pickle from this twice in a lifetime offer....)
Me, I'd go for:
La Chinata Smoked Paprika (available from Sainsburys)
500g supermarket extra mature Cheddar (from anywhere)
OR a jar of Geeta's Garlic Pickle (which I cannot even see in UK where I live at the moment, but is vastly superior to the Patak version)
Interesting to note that VS also mentioned cheese, but I can't help wondering what you'd actually do with it in Thailand. I think if I was stranded for the rest of my life in the hellhole that is Hua Hin, and if somebody brought me out some decent Cheddar, I would simply end up cramming huge chunks of it into my mouth as fast as I could. I have no doubt that this rumoured (?) Villa Supermarket will stock something similar, but I have a feeling that its very price will have me drooling like a penniless street urchin outside a sweetshop window.
Anyway, anyone for some Porridge Oats?

Nice tries, so far...but if it turns out that your favoured brand of tea is easily available out there I'm afraid you are doomed.

Go to bed Sandman, NOW! :D

Ham & Bacon do PG.

The Tesco's own brand in the cardboardy/red labelling with the big red 'T' is the same as their own label/brand from the UK.

Sandman 10 out of 10 for effort but I think you need a trip to JD's place and most of your cravings will be answered (from what I saw in one of his posts the other day).
