Snake in the house!

Post by MrPlum »

Yesterday I chased a snake out of the house. A recent plague of frogs probably brought it onto the property.

I would like to identify it to see if I need to call the local snake catcher (is there one in Hua Hin?). I'm not 100% sure but it looked like this one... only a bit shorter.

It looks like a rat snake to me, harmless. However, rat snakes do resemble king cobra's as well. If you're not sure, call the snake man, but it's probably long gone by now if your raised a commotion, unless it's nesting.

We have problems with baby cobra's everywhere over here each March/April, so I assume mating/nesting season starts in a month or so, not now. Pete

They're harmless Mr P.

They like their chin stroked and become quite loyal. Image

Here's a king cobra photo when he's 'relaxed' and hood not extended. Pete

This will make it more confusing but here's a link for every type of rat snake in the world, apparently.

We killed one at my place here which looked exactly like the 12th photo, Cantor's Ratsnake, which resembles your photo. Pete

That very well could be a cobra MrP. How did it act when you approached? Was it very fast. (Cobras are very fast and can (outrun (outslither??) most people!)

Thank you all for the quick and reassuringly useful advice. :thumb:

It does seem a toss up between a 'relaxed' cobra and the apparently common rat snake. My feeling is it's the latter since it moved more slowly than I did and was more interested in escape than being aggressive.

I am totally afraid of snakes. It doesn't make a difference what kind it is, I run the other way.

I would say it's a rat snake but as others have pointed out, it's easy to make the wrong assumption so do be careful. Also, I think the rat snakes can also flatten their hood in the same way a cobra does. I once confronted a snake here in the garden and it immediately flattened its hood, so thinking it was a cobra I handed out the death penalty but was later told that it was a harmless snake by the locals. Of course they never complained as it ended up in the pot shortly after. Lately it seems the Malaysian Pit Vipers have taken a liking to our property, with me having killed three in the past two months. If I was living alone I'd just let them be but with two young kids I can't take a chance.

I'm 99% sure this is a rat snake.
When you study the picture taken by Mr Plum you will see that the posterior part of the body is keeled and the head is also strongly indicating that this a rat snake.
An entirely harmless snake for you and me, and loved by the king cobras.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Our gardener just caught this in the bushes the other day and threw it over the wall, he prefers to let them go rather than kill them.

If it comes back in again should we be concerned, or do you think it's harmless ??

Obviously harmless according to the photo... :D my experience with cobras here (in the wild) is that you can't get near them even if you tried. I would be much more worried about the vipers, especially the Malayan Pit Viper that camouflages itself and sits quietly until you get too close, then it's too late.

They are very, very, common here, very poisonous, and according to a statistic I read are responsible for more bites than any venomous animal in South Asia.

This is what they look like...

... and another (harmless I think) snake got too close to the "jaws of death"...
