As an (old) Aussie I would have to agree with you 100%, VS. Some of the petty rules and regulations are an insult to peoples intelligence. Without being rasicst I have to wonder just how much of it has been bought about by the very diverse migrant population that we now have in Oz. This is not to say that the Migrants are to blame, just possibly a consequence.Vital Spark wrote:I would have agreed with you SM about Oz being a choice to settle down in, until Mr.VS and I spent a few weeks there three years ago.
Loved the country, and the people - hated the strict rules and regs.
Regulations everywhere. Stayed with a friend on Coochie Mudlo, a small island off the coast of Brisbane. He couldn't let his dog off the lead, even on a deserted beach, couldn't park his car where he wanted, restrictions and regulations all over the place. I found it difficult to find a place where I could have a ciggy, and the friendly Aussies were complaining about all the rules and regs. It was quite an eye opener.
Stayed down in Somers in Victoria for a week. Beautiful scenery, lovely people, but couldn't buy a beer in town.It reminded us of Pleasantville in a quirky, spooky kind of way.
We found Oz even more restricting than the UK (and that's saying something!) which surprised us somewhat.VS
