Stoke have just spent more than that and they haven't earnt money from good runs in the Champions league over the years, one of the biggest merchandise incomes in world football, the biggest sponsorship deal in world football etc.
The fact is that we haven't had a transfer kitty for 3 years, it's been sell to buy, we're currently treading water to pay the £100'000 a day (£36.4 million a year) interest rates of the owners, not investing to try and win something.
Benitez' spending gets distorted beyond belief, his only losses were Keane and Pennant (who he only bought because they wouldn't put up the extra few million for David Silva)
I actually really liked the look of Aquilani towards the end of last season and he may have come good if Benitez had stayed.
So, against United our whole starting 11 cost £64 million, about the same as Rooney and Berbatov, and Liverpool are expected to challenge for the league.
I'm actually more concerned with what's going on in the boardroom than on the pitch at the moment which is a sad state affairs. Thanks for that H&G.
