Second one is a viper. Nasty one at that.

Christ, I hope the snake was reasonably big if it was looking for the satan lizard or it'd get savaged.

I've got one in my roof, I think it took a minor bird out.
It was probably about 4 feet long? But the things are so skinny.

I can't find the better video I saw before, but here's one youtube video of a golden tree snake which overpowered a tokay.

I'm pretty sure that's an ornate tree snake or ornate green tree snake. I had one outside my bungalow in Phuket, and killed one :( in my first house on Soi 80. GF and I woke up with it crawling down the wall!

If it is, it is mildly venomous but not dangerous to you or the dogs because its mouth is very small, its fangs are near the back, and the venom drips rather than injects. They are supposed to be rare, but I think not, as they constitute fifty percent of the snakes I've seen in Thailand.
Same soi, and sounds like same snake! It was descending my kitchen wall when I first saw it. By the time I returned with the camera, it was mostly hiding between a roof support beam and the wall.

It was a beautiful and well behaved (it left after only a short looksee) snake, but again, my concern was if *it* made it into the kitchen, why couldn't a cobra, pit viper or python, and *those* creatures I do not want in my house.

We've had plenty of vipers on our property, but never one in the house. If a python can in, I would actually be quite amused, because unless it is massive, and I mean really massive, it can do you no harm at all. Cobras will come into a home though, so watch out for those. BTW, there's one particular snake over here that looks like a cobra, and even flattens it head like a cobra, but apparently is harmless. We had one here, and when I approached it, it did the whole cobra act, so we called over some workers........bad move, because in a flash they had it, swung it around and slammed it into into the ground, and that was their supper.

We do get cobras here quite often, but as others have said, they tend to flee as soon as they sense danger. The vipers don't budge. I very nearly stood on the first one that came to visit. He/she was coiled up next to the bike, and could easily have bitten me because my foot was about four or five inches from it when I saw it. From what I've read, about 700 people get bitten by M vipers in Thailand every year.

That's what I thought, as well, until I read about some escaped pet python (in Florida, I think) that killed a child by *strangling* it. I had previously thought the python would need to be big enough to wrap around a person's chest and squeeze it, but to strangle a person, it wouldn't take a terribly large python, would it?

Yes, the second snake is definitely a viper, so just remember what they look like in case you come across anymore in the future. Fortunately they all look exactly the same so they're easy to identify. Cobras can vary quite a bit in appearance, but to be honest, I don't think that first snake that came to visit is a cobra. Have you thought about making a snake catcher? Dead easy to make for around 100 baht, and it allows you to safely remove snakes without having to kill them.

Even though there are several dangerous ones in Thailand, it's really only the vipers and cobras we have to be careful of here in Hua-Hin. Back home in SA, it was the puff adders that were buggers, rather than vipers. As with the vipers, puff adders also don't like to move their asses when you approach them, and they have bad tempers and powerful venom. The other one we had to watch out for back home was the black mamba. There's an anti-venom nowadays, but there wasn't before, and a bite usually kills with about half an hour. Fortunately they are similar to cobras, in that they would rather flee than bite.

Although I am really scared of snakes, I would never dream of hurting or killing one. I am interested in buying the implement for removing them safely. I am not sure if they are available in HH. Does anyone know?

(although it says killer on this link, I would not kill them)

Someone wrote previously why would someone want to come to live in Thailand if afraid of snakes. I am really frightned by them, but used to live in the New Forest where there are loads of Adders, as a child you learn not to mess with them...just run! I am also scared of walking through a load of pigeons, but still would live in London. We have to learn to live with animals and nature, respect them. :)

Is it true that if you have frogs in the garden, there are probably no snakes there? Anyone know please?

Siani,

You can easily make one of those catchers yourself.

With regard to the frogs, I would think the opposite would be correct.

I will have to keep my wits about me :naughty:

Hey had a dead baby viper (like 5 inches long) in my driveway a couple of days ago, and the pics posted made identification easy, thanks.

For sure from neighbours overgrown yard.

Concern is where baby, those that made the baby around.
Hence more vigilance in my yard....

Wow, the useful trivia one can learn here. This is very re-assuring info from one of the snake-catcher links above:

"Apparently because this device does not give off any heat, the snake can't detect it. Thus the brave soul can move it over a raised snake head."

So, those beady little eyes aren't much use other than as infra-red detectors? If so, that would vastly improve my confidence in trying to catch a snake. I wouldn't want to hack away at one and kill it, just safely and confidently lasso it and escort it from the premises.

Yes, many, many times - far easier than you might think. The Thais use a similar idea to catch lizards which they then eat. They work great - why not make one and see for yourself
