Yes that is an option Moja, but I was also thinking of companionship maybe :)

Was initially a joke but after some thought what better sort of place to finish ones days? Definitely go with a smile on your face :)

On a serious note I have been to a few nursing homes. My Aunt was in the business and made a lot of money and old folks happy until the PC,Health and safety,Do gooders stepped in to make businesses nonviable

They were dismal places to finish ones days IMO

I do have a younger local wife to look after me if she doesn't kick me to the curb, but I also suspect that with my lifestyle I, like many of my friends before me, will not live to the point of having to be taken care of. A massive stroke, heart attack, liver failure or some other fairly quick malady will no doubt take me down before that point.

I used to say "live hard, die young, and leave a good looking corpse", but I've already lived too long for that last bit!
Classic, hhfarang. I'm maybe a couple of years younger than you but I'm always working on the principle that I'd "better get my kicks in before the whole ****house goes up in flames".
Just trying to lighten the topic up everyone.
Yes, I wonder about all as well but I made my choice years ago and I simply don't know the answer.
I very much doubt that any angelic, socially minded organisation will give me solace in later years here or anywhere in the world, for that matter.
I've had it, havn't I?

^ Yes, what we in the states call an "assisted living facility". My Mother was in one for a while and she had a small apartment in a building with shared facilities like a social area and a dining hall, plus it had planned activities for those who wanted to be social and participate. She wasn't really sick, she was just very old (90's) and even thought she could mostly care for herself, it wasn't safe for her to be alone all the time in case she fell or got sick.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

There are probably a few venues in Nana that will offer you solace, regardless of age, as long as you have the baht!

Maybe that is a business opportunity, a old age bar! The rooms in the back though are for sleeping!!

My aunt was in that kind of place in the UK and loved it. Much better than the 'old peoples' homes' here which look like hell holes IMO. Communal afternoons of whist and tea at 5 pm really wouldn't be my idea of fun!
It is important that people can still have their own space, have friends round, make a cuppa and pop something in the microwave, while still having the security of onsite help when needed.
There are probably housing developments in HH which come close - or condo living could be an option. But it's still the quick access to a warden/medical help which is missing.
Surely this is a serious business concept for one of the developers out there? Sell the units on the proviso that ownership reverts in full to the developer upon the death of the buyer. Provide qualifed warden/nurse on site and give them free accomodation. Fit the units with emergency pull cords etc and provide those phones with the necklace call button things. Have nonslip shower rooms with fitted fold down seats, and on site laundry facilites. A little club house - golf trolleys to help people around... God it's starting to sound like The Prisoner isn't it? All we need is a big balloon coming out of the sea - but with the numbers of retirees increasing surely there will sooner or later be a market?

There was/still is an old peoples' home next to my house in London. I used to have a few barbies in the summertime and it seemed the whole street came along - most were invited. Hired a DJ and it was generally loud music and bad behaviour.
The old folk loved it. I used to shout up to them saying that if they wanted the music turned down all they had to was say. No way. "Turn it up" they responded and danced away on the veranda overlooking my place.
Now that would be a good place to "retire to" but unfortunately I reckon that all my "contacts" have passed on to pastures new by now.

Yes, good point, but what about the same in HH..as in a guest house for OAP's?

It will probably happen sometime Siani. One of the problems I think with HH - as opposed to some other places in Thailand - is that it still has a relatively new influx of farang who have found the place later in life, and who have the income to live there in some comfort. It's never been a 'hippy' type town.
Last month I came across a guesthouse up North which had been founded by one such hippy type group. Some of them must have been there for many years now, living in what is really a commune kind of environment but with paying guests, and still very close to the Thai community. That place seemed to me to provide the best of all worlds for farang who are getting older.
A sprout is for life - not just for Christmas.

Yes maybe you are right Mags. I just think that maybe not everyone wants to live alone or pay for a housekeeper/girlfriend. This would give a lot of people freedom to do what they want, go to the bar or play golf etc. then come back to a friendly place with some of your friends to chat with :) Lovely home cooked food etc :)
