Nice one, you just got arguably the best phone available for £200.

Superb deal.

Thanks. I won't be using it in anger until I get to Thailand in mid-April.

I've been offered a Samsung Galaxy S2 (brand new - still boxed) for £200. This is a genuine offer of a genuine product (I'm not going into details here) - not off the back of a lorry. Does this sound like a good deal please?

If I invested my hard earned cash, how easy would it be to get it up and running when I get to Thailand?
I think it is a good deal BB. I bought mine in the big electrical shop at the bottom of Soi 88. I paid 14000 baht for it. I then got the tax back at the airport. The prices are competative in HH. The electrical shop was better than MV as they were reluctant to give a tax receipt there in MV. You must make sure there is nothing wrong with it, if secondhand. I went to MV afterwards and bought a film to go over the screen to stop it scratching, also a case which covers the back. Well worth it. The girl in MV fitted the screen film for me, a real expert.
It's a great phone, I really like it. My son bought the other version, newer so he said, but now says he prefers mine. The camera on it is really super, for a phone.

No, it's in the UK at the moment - still waiting to arrive from the suppliers.

I'd start getting used to Android and getting some apps as soon as you get it BB.

Skype and/or Viber might come in handy when your in Thailand.

14000 baht still sounds cheap, S2 is £430 in UK.

Just to clarify where the phone is coming from (I've got a laptop coming from the same source). A friend of mine runs his own business from home. 2 weeks ago the house was broken into, and amongst other things, he lost 3 laptops and 2 phones.

Needing these things to run his business, and assuming the insurance would pay out, he went out on the Monday morning and purchased replacements. The insurance company are now insisting that they will replace like with like (no cash!!) - obviously they buy this stuff at huge discounts.

My friend is now trying to recoup some of the money he paid out by selling off the insurance replacement items at half the market value.

I'm a complete mobile phone ignoramus (and tight git). I'm still happy using my £12 Nokia, which I've had for quite a few years. I'm on a very basic contract, which costs me about £3 per month. It just seems too much trouble to activate it for 6 to 8 weeks before I move to Thailand.

There's no way that my Virgin Plan would allow access to the Internet. Is there a simple (cheap) way of getting it activated for just a few weeks here in the UK?

For £0.50 per day for 25MB allowance Virgin Mobile in UK offer Mobile broadband for Pay as You Go customers.
Pay for only the days you use it. Go over the 25MB daily limit and it becomes a lot more expensive at £2 per MB.
They now use the Orange network combined with T-Mobile's so signal coverage has much improved.
You could also use it on Wi-Fi at home, I guess, to get used to it and load apps.

I bought it last May, so may still be the same price. I think I got about £20 tax back in the airport. As you say they are over £400 in the UK. I use skype all the time with it.
I have a skype "Unlimited world" subscription which means I can phone Thailand etc for unlimited calls, chat for as long as you like.

That will work out at about £182 for one year...50p a day. You are almost there with the cost. Do you have to be tied into a contract for that?
if it were me I would buy one. I am with 3 mobile which means that other members in the family who have 3 also get free calls. I pay £15 a month for an add on package with them, I have never run out. Also if you are going to Thailand BB you must consider what network you will use there.
I am not sure who has the best deals...I have only used Happy.

Skype now sell a small switching box (Freetalk) which when connected to your router and normal phone allows you to place calls through Skype without needing a laptop or mobile phone.

As I'm moving to live in Thailand very soon, I don't want to get tied up with a contract.
