I think it depends on what country you come from as to what you call a certain kind of cooking.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

A roast is a roast, no matter where you come from
Grilled food is grilled food, no matter where you come from
Fried food is fried food, no matter where you come from

So, why is a BBQ Not afforded the same recognition? As you can see from posts left by other members who I'm sure come from "North" of the equator , cooking food outdoors doesn't make it a BBQ. BBQ food is cooked over coals, obtained either from burning wood, or from ready prepared charcoal. The food smells different, and tastes different, therefor it is different. :thumb:

Personally I couldn't care less if you want to use gas or not, but strictly speaking, it just ain't a BBQ, or as we call it in South Africa, a braai.

Quote from Wikipedia:

Barbecue or barbeque (common spelling variant)[1] (with abbreviations BBQ, Bar-B-Q and Barbie), used chiefly in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia (called Braai in South Africa) is a method and apparatus for cooking meat, poultry and occasionally fish with the heat and hot smoke of a fire, smoking wood, or hot coals of charcoal. Typically, to grill is to cook in this manner quickly, while barbecue is typically a much slower method utilizing less heat than grilling, attended to over an extended period of several hours.
The term as a noun can refer to the meat, the cooking apparatus itself (the "Barbecue grill" or simply "Barbecue") or to a party that includes such food or such preparation methods. The term as an adjective can refer to foods cooked by this method. The term is also used as a verb for the act of cooking food in this manner.
Barbecue is usually done in an outdoor environment by cooking and smoking the meat over wood or charcoal. Restaurant barbecue may be cooked in large brick or metal ovens specially designed for that purpose.

It seems people from both North and South know the difference..... :neener:

My gas BBQ had something called Lava rocks in the bottom that made the food taste like it was cooked over charcoal... when you buy a gas "grill" in the U.S. it is advertised as a gas BBQ or Bar-B-Q, so maybe it's a marketing thing that I grew up with. We even have indoor Bar-B-Qs in the U.S. that are installed in your kitchen counter and produce BBQ flavored foods.

We also used to add soaked wood chips to the gas grill to produce the BBQ flavor so it's all a matter of semantics. Google BBQ grills:

I only asked "WHERE" I could buy a portable BBQ, I did not want the Oxford dictionary explanation of what a BBQ is. I wonder what you all do in Hua Hin. I thought coming to Hua Hin to live meant going out and having having the time of your life in LOS not sitting on a computer in your little room all day looking at this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KirkyBOY.... Your question has been answered from what I read here.... It was stated that BBQ's that you fancy are available pretty much anywhere.... I attest to that too...

You've also been given more information on BBQ's from seasoned pros on this forum...Count your blessings....What is the harm..?

It's probably in your best interests.... not to insult these same people as they are probably the ones who will offer sound answers to your future queries.... :o

While you are being so smart taking helpful posters to task for their efforts, you may want to look in the mirror.
You have blatantly posted that it is your intention to break the Thai law by illegally importing a prohibited item, ie; meat. Try this in Australia and you will not just have the items confiscated, but you WILL be charged with making a false declaration, along with a couple of other offences.

Yes, the Thais are very "flexible" with enforcing their laws, but they make it very clear at the Airport that some food products are banned. It is exactly because of smart arse people like you that they are now enforcing this particular law.

As kirkyboy has had his answer to the OP, I'm going to lock this thread before it gets out of control. Hopefully, you'll all agree that it's not worth falling out over a BBQ.
