So why the hell are you here...... beggars belief!!!
I ask myself that same question every day? Would you like to buy my house so I can get the hell out? It's very safe...
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Note that Thailand is above the U.S. and these stats are total murders (with firearms), not per capita... so this would indicate that you are many times more likely to be murdered with a firearm in Thailand than in the U.S. if you also compare the populations of the two countries and do the math to come up with a per capita figure.
Some insight into the high gun death rates here...
"Thailand ranks low for most reported crimes when compared with Western countries - with one big exception - Thailand is near the top of any list of countries for murder with firearms. Gun crime is most often related to gang wars. There is a serious problem of organized drug crime in the border areas with Burma, Cambodia and Laos. Guns are also often used to settle business disputes and jealous lovers, both men and women use guns to settle scores depressingly often."
"The murder weapon of choice for Thailand is the gun, more so than other countries, 79% of Thailand murders were done so with a gun. Shootings/murders in Thailand can usually be broken down to business/land feuds, school rivalries, adultery/jealousy rages, and hired assassins (i.e. political motivations). The average tourist or visitor will rarely ever likely be randomly caught up in the line of a bullet."

SJ it does depend on if reported, by who and if recorded. Hard to believe has a 0.2 figure for burglaries! Some cops I imagine don't report "crimes" as it does not look good and dare I say it they may have to do something.

Yes, totally agree crimes will be hugely under-reported here. Not sure burglaries are a big issue across the country though are they, assume most Thai households do not have that much in value laying around!? Whereas I'm sure the numbers will be higher in relation to farang houses per 1,000 farangs here, just as the number of farangs who are on the wrong end of gun crime will be much less tha the national average, imho. But the figures overall reflect my experiences over 15+ years since starting visiting as a tourist.

I've honestly never once been, or felt, threatened at any time wandering around all hours in all manner of less salubrious areas  Whereas if I wandered round Hounslow/Feltham/Kingston high street's back home every weekend in the small hours, I'd consider myself lucky to get home unscathed. Street crime/assaults/robberies/muggings etc are very rare from what I have seen here... if you're respectful and mind your own business. The other extreme is if you do offend you could well end up in serious trouble. Burglaries is an issue, but they can be easily prevented imo. And I don't mean by getting an alarm but by what we did where I live about 5 years ago, a number of houses clubbing together and getting a good, reliable local friend/aqaintence to properly patrol your 5, 6, 7 houses, 1,500 Baht/month is a bargain to almost guarantee intruder-free nights. Not possible to organize in all situations/locations obviously.

Yes SJ, I totally agree with your take on things. That is, burglaries and etc are mostly restricted to areas that are popular between expats and tourists, and perhaps in places like Bangkok. Gun crime is almost exclusively reserved for Thais. I must admit that I don't feel quite as safe these days as I did before, but of course that could also just be the result of having lived here now for a good many years.

By comparison, I seriously doubt anyone would be able to walk the length of any road in any major South African city after nightfall, and make it to the other end without being mugged and/or killed. My own wife, along with my sister, was robbed of her jewelry in broad daylight on her very first day in Cape Town.

On the other hand, I myself have only been a victim of crime once in my life, and that was when my house in the UK (Aberdeen) was kindly emptied while I was over here on holiday. And, for those who complain about the Thai police, you'll be glad to know the police in the UK did nothing apart from giving me a copy of a report that I was meant to give to the insurance company. They, like their Thai cousins, also didn't do any investigation, so I think it's much the same wherever you go.

The wife's brother in lam na rai got done over several weeks back as did a number of other isolated houses along the main road by some likely lads on motor scooters. They were finally caught!
