hey dave, back to the topic and hope that i don't break any rules.....i stayed at the sofitel when it was the Railway Hotel and in disrepair....at 500 baht a nite it was a bit overpriced but that was 20 yrs ago. Stayed there once in the 90s after the renovations and it was great but I really preferred the annex across the street, i believe it is called the Sofitel Central Village.....old bungalows up on stilts that have been refurbished. They all have very nice porches where you can sit and enjoy the sunrise over the water or a libation in the evening. The swimming pool isn't as crowded as the main hotel and u still eat the great breakfast in the main dining room at the sofitel. More value for money i'm sure and i really think it is a nicer setting

Thanks Dan, appreciate the input. Both the Sofitel and Hilton were fully booked for the first week in August - must be holiday time I guess. I'm in the Marriott now, pretty expensive but have a nice room with an ocean view. They'd better give me a king bed though, otherwise I'll be very grumpy!!
