We don't have a scale so I've never weighed any of the eggs, but I'm amazed at just how much diet can affect egg production with layers.
With our regular Thai "gai baan" we'll get the same size and same quantity of eggs whether we feed them or not. With the layers on the other hand, diet determines how many eggs we get. Apparently, if we feed them only proper chicken feed, we should be getting between 40 to 50 eggs per day from 50 hens. Since we mix their diet with cracked corn and quite a lot of greens, we only average around 25 to 30 eggs per day. It seems, according to the research I've done, that protein is the important thing so if you don't fancy using commercial chicken feed, you need to supply an alternative source of protein............meat or fish, although fish apparently alters the taste of the eggs.
Anyway, my MIL must be doing something right because so far we haven't had any complaints about her eggs. Personally I think many of the eggs were on the small side before, but things seem to have evened out, and most are now a good size.
I still love the idea of getting and eating eggs which are only a day or two old, compared to supermarket eggs which are weeks old. The only downside is, I'm not sure if I'll eat store bought eggs again, thanks to the internet and "freedom of information". I guess sometimes ignorance really is bliss.
