question 1 any ideas what %age of my lungs were not working
question 2 any ideas what %age of my lungs i will get back/clean up

still not smoking or drinking went to a monks party last night i had to leave after the food was finished and everybody light up the craving was bad but i went home and watched cartoons
I can only go on what I've been told sarge. That is, a long term smoker like yourself takes about 5-6 years to get the lungs back into the best shape they'll ever be again. Now "ever be" is the key and that really depends upon damage, age and probably many other factors. They can give you lung air capacity tests at the hospital when you get there for your heart exam. Just ask the doc.

I've read somewhere that a heavy 20 year smoker that quits in his 40's, in 5-6 years gets the same lung capacity back as it is for a person his age who never smoked. I don't know about those in their 50's and 60's. Pete

Seargent

I quit smoking at 48 (that was 25 years ago) and I think my lungs are as good as they were in my 30's, started smoking at 15 and was going through 60 a day when I finally quit. I doubt seriously if I would be here today if I hadn't quit.

Good on ya, it is worth the sufering. In three years the urge will be gone. Well 99% of the time.

Good luck and take it a day at a time. Just never have one today.

If so, have a good trip and hope all goes well.

Sarge, good to hear that you are getting things sorted out on the medical front; incidentally, fish and chips is a bit off topic, but it sounds good!

I was very successful in giving up smoking ...when I had the heart attack I couldn't breath so giving up was easy ! Might be better to give up earlier .. might even prevent a heart attack.

:D Was sent this via e-mail...

Good DOCTOR!!!!

HEALTH QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it... Don't waste them on exercise . Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables . So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?

A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body and you have fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain...Good!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: You're not listening.... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. I n fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO Cocoa beans! Another vegetable. It's the best feel-good food around!!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?

A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?

A: Hey! 'Round' is a shape! !

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.

And remember:
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO H OO, What a Ride!"

Keep at it Sarge

1st July will see me surviving 4 years without the weed.

It's not been easy - but as most will tell you - one day at a time.

Which - at the risk of upsetting Dr. Dave - is the title of a splendid song sung by Joe Walsh of the Eagles - about giving up the joys of imbibing alcohol
