Peaceful paradise or construction carnage?

Post by buksida »

<rant>

It seems to me that the thing that allured most of us to Hua Hin in the first instance is being swallowed up by a menace that can only be described as hell on earth. Long gone are the days when you can sit out on your balcony and watch the swaying palm fronds while slipping into a state of total relaxation. Or kick back in the yard with a few pals and a case of cold beer chatting about life, the universe and everything.

Now you would be lucky to hear yourself think over the incessant, unrelenting, torturous din of hammers, drills, grinders, band saws, planers, sanders and chisels. Nearly every soi in this town is being polluted by the viral like spread of construction in Hua Hin. I must have been down at least 15 different sois on my general travels last week and not one was void of the cacophony of construction or the Issan ninja building squad doing overtime to knock up another tacky faceless shed that will no doubt be sold to some fat retired westerner for 4 times its value.

The peaceful, once quiet, town of Hua Hin is being consumed by builders, we may as well all be living in Milton bloody Keynes.

Please do not tell me they have sent the concrete cows over to HH that used to stand in the fields next to the Euston to North Railway Line

I think they just scaled them down a little and stuck them outside the Golden Place on the main road.

When I first came over, town was aleady developing, but building work was sporadic. Businesses would get on with face lifts in the low season, so noise pollution was generally confined to a couple of months a year.
Now, however, it's year round and everywhere. I don't envy you the building work that's going on around you at the moment.
Does Thailand have any laws governing when this type of work can be done. IE - can't start before 8am. Must finish at 5-6pm?
At my old house, there were a number of rooms around it. One moring I fell out of bed as work started on one of the adjacent rooms. It was 6am. Had a word with the owner and we came to a compromise that work wouldn't start until 8am, finish at 5.30pm and not on Sundays. They actually honoured the agreement as well.

Construction

After the recent posts on this subject I can see a mad rush from tourists to cancel Hua Hin bookings and look at somewhere else. Is it really that bad? I have booked the Marriot for November/December time is it just as bad out there? the last thing I need on holiday is listening to jack hammers going all day.

Cat,
I think us ex pats, myself included, play this noise situation up a bit. However, you have to appreciate that we live here and our "peaceful existence" is continually disrupted by the inevitable expansion of town.
You won't have any problem staying at The Marriot, or any other major hotel in town for that matter.
You'll only have to make sure that you don't choose a bar or restaurant that is blighted by the noise next door.

As said above, most of the construction carnage is occuring in the residential areas of town a little further out, you should be fine in a big hotel

Its like this south of town in Khao Tao and Pak Nam Pran,in Khao Tao there is no water most of the time starts at 5am turns off at 8pm and this is in the rainy season, been like this for at least 8 months and it was worse in Feb 5am turn of 9am then back on at 5pm till 8pm then of all night, there are about 300 new houses being built in Khao Tao there will not be enough water unless something is done soon also the crime has got so much worse than before, builders everywhere some roads are full of dust from the trucks and what was a very nice place to live has changed, its like living in a Bangkok surburb.

Don't get me started on this one, its my personal bugbear. This once small town is being pillaged and raped by greedy developers with all the town planning direction of Stevie wonder playing golf!!!
What a crying shame is all I can say. Hot bloody housing estates and crappy builds.
It's the main reason im not buying now.
As long as there are people out there with more money than sense then the fire will rage on.
Come to Thailand and live not 2ft away from Herman the German and his dogs or John from Essex... sweet as my son! I think not.
I came here to get away from all that not live among it.
And don't give me that progress crap. You can have progress and make it a nice place to reside as well.
shame shame shame....... :cuss:

I have no objection to the occupants of these buildings, after all more foreigners here means more growth and more business for the likes of me who are trying to make a living in Asia and not have to go back to Arseland every few months to make my bread.

What I object to is the perpetual noise that just turns a normally relatively mild mannered and easy going character into wild, red eyed beast that is ready to batter to death the next hammer wielding skinny builder he sees.

I actually did gave them a torrent of abuse yesterday, they stopped and called the foreman. My torrent of abuse extended to him too. Now I don't know whether they were impressed at my ability to get extemely angry and hurl insults in their language but the noise sure stopped today.

I bet the filthy dickturds are saving it up for Sunday morning :cuss:

How long before these building gimps are finished? I reckon two months, a month and a half if you scream at them every day! :D

I swear these dickheads are doing it on purpose now, the house is virtually done, painted, tiled, the lot yet they still go through the ritual half hour of hammering at 8am then silence for the rest of the day.

I only hope the owner moves in themself, then I can enjoy making their lives a living hell for the next four months.

Anyone fancy a rave?

Get a new sound system
I'm working on it but you cant get decent amplifiers in Hua Hin, just those crappy Thai plastic "5000 watt" (yeah right) ones that are lighter than a tissue box and last about a month.
