its always easy to criticise & often a lot more difficult to take criticism.
it is almost impossible in business to have a 100% happy customer feedback, especially in the bar/restaurant trade.
because people differ so much in preferences & standards its difficult to please everyone every time, as much as you try to.
the negative posts are part & parcel of the trade because everyone is entitled to their opinion.
i have to say though, your responses have been very positive bb :thumb:

the next time i am in hh i will certainly pay a visit to your place

i had to add this little extract from your reply cos it did make me chuckle :D

Dear bill

Post by nevets »

Dear Bill, thanks for the offer of a job alas to shy to sing in public , unless maybe drunk and then we would not want me anywhere near the mike would we . I will come down and try the food when i can , living inland and a long way from HH don't go very often. And i don't complain much about bars to get them a bad name ,its bad enough trying to make a living out here with out getting bad publicity . If the bars are no good people vote with there feet and and the bar is gone, good luke for the future.

Dear smiles ...
Now to the undistinguished Fish and Chips. The Fish arrives frozen in filleted 7oz loin pieces all the way from Norway. As for tasteless, what can I say? It arrives frozen, then we thaw the fish season and batter it, deep fry it and then wrap it in newspaper just as you would get it in the UK
... "

Thanks Mr Buffalo, for the very decent response.

I don't think I'll take you up on the freebee, but I might drop in one of these days and introduce myself. The cold draft was a nice touch, and one I should have mentioned as a plus.

The crux of my criticism (the other items being mere garnish) was obviously the "tasteless" accusation.
I won't and can't back down from that, as it was my definite opinion (stated to my partner that night ... not a 'lady' I should add / :P ... as was his very spontaneous agreement regarding his own meal).

Thinking on this, I must admit the various vigourous (some quite dramatic) 'tastes' of Thai cooking have won over me over the years and relegated much (not all ... not pizza ... or roasted chicked subs at Subway) western food to my own personal backburner designation of tastelessness.

So in fact, the fish and chips at your restaurant may or may not be much different from any other Brit fish & chip joint ... either in Thailand, Vancouver, or Swindon. So I can easily understand your point of expressing a kind of shrugging hopelessness at criticisms in the 'taste' realm. "... what can I do ..." indeed.

So thanks for the good-natured reply (and offer), and hope you find a similar feeling in mine.

Cheers ...
Just one more reason why I love living in Thailand ...

the best ribs you've ever had, for sure

Post by (buffalo) Bill »

Smiles thanks for the response, I would probably agree with you, if you are used to eating spicy food English fish & chips may come across as quite bland.

Come and try our spare ribs they are not bland and I would say they will be the best you have ever had in fact if you don’t like them you don’t have to pay for them.

First let me say that I really like the place and I’m used to bad service in Thailand but last night at Buffalos was terrible. I was starving so I went down with my girlfriend to try the famous ribs. We got there at 5pm(the only customers) and shortly after ordered the ribs and lamb chops with a few sides. After we had ordered a family of 4 arrived and ordered. After 15 minutes our side orders arrived. The family of 4 were given their starters. After about another 15 minutes, no meals to go with our sides? I asked where our food was and got told 1 minute. I then waited some more and couldn’t believe it as the family of 4 were served their main meals. I asked why the family were served 2 courses before we got 1 since we had ordered first. Confused looks and again I was told 1 minute. At 6.20pm I gave up and left. I wouldn’t have minded so much but having to watch people who ordered after being served 2 courses was really annoying.

I do still like the place though and will probably give it another try!

Buffalo Tavern

Post by hhfarang »

Just came home from lunch at the Buffalo Tavern. The decor is very well done and the beer selection is good.

I had a bacon cheesburger with chips and the meat was very tasty and the chips were good, however, a bit overpriced. I can get the same burger and chips at many bars around town for much less than 220 baht.

My friend had the fish and chips and I tasted it. I have to agree with the previous poster that the fish was flavorless. on top of that it had a mushy consistency. The beer batter was good but that was all and 300 baht is a lot to pay for good beer batter.

I am a Hua Hin expat of four years and if there are a lot of expats there at night I suspect they come for the beer and chat, not for the food at the menu prices.

Sorry Bill, just being honest and don't worry, I'm not looking for a free meal, but your new place looks like another one designed tourists rather than repeat local business. Maybe you can prove me wrong during the coming off season.

fish and chips

Post by huahinsimon »

I had the fish and chips despite the 300 baht price.
Great presentation! a big slab of golden battered fish placed before me. With great anticipation I cut into it and.... the fish didn't flake, it mushed, kinda like the mushy peas, and no flavor.
180 baht for a jug of Chang

and a mandatory 10% service charge.
Hope you give it to the wait staff, Bill. Don't buffalo us now.

Shoulda tried the pork spare ribs that got good reviews. but coulda, woulda, shoulda. :(

I invariably stick to the ribs or Sunday roast which I think are excellent and I'm no longer the pint of beer man anymore (age?)

I think the 10% is steep, particularly when pricing out 2 meals in the 300 to 400 range but Bill will tell you overheads are high and that includes higher paid wages for his staff

Personally regarding tipping my misses has always made sure that if we have had good service from a particular member of staff, the tip goes discreetly into his/her pocket

Maybe bars and restaurants should lower their prices during off season to ensure capturing local residents

YOBT's will obviously survive if it manages through the low season but I think many bars and Restaurants are going to suffer during the low season. Their overheads remain the same and their revenue drops.

Thai logic though is to raise the prices to compensate!! Suicide :(

As a sponsor, personally I don't see how he's getting priceless advertising - he is paying his dues.

The message I'm getting from this thread is avoid the fish & Chips at all costs.
