Women have the right to choose their titles:

(BangkokPost.com) - Thai women are given the right to choose how they want to be addressed as the new law on name titles came into effect Wednesday.
Before, married women had to change their titles from Miss to Mrs. The title remained unchanged even if they were divorced or their husbands passed away.
But the new law allows women to choose their titles, whether they are single, married or widowed.

Each district office in Bangkok has given the service to about five women for two hours after they opened.

Most of the women applying said they were divorced.

Can't see a problem with it personally. It's been the norm in other countries for years, including the option to revert to your maiden name after divorce, or to keep your maiden name after marriage.
In my experience it's only the guys who get hung up about it!
I chose to keep my married name after divorce, together with the 'Mrs'. For one - it would have been too much hassle to change the name back, and I figured that anyone daft enough to have married in the first place should bear the scar of 'Mrs' as a penance! (The absurd sounding 'Ms' was never an option IMO.)
Thai ladies might, in some cases, prefer to keep the title 'Miss' for their own personal reasons. Up to the new other half then to establish the truth - if they want to. But what would it prove thats any different to before?

Just like farang men can hide the fact that they have a farang or Thai wife already....

I agree with Margaret that men seem to get more screwed up about the title issue than women. I can't stand the Ms. title, but it's interesting that most of my (unmarried) students and (unmarried) Thai colleagues use this title when they're writing their names in English.

Interesting comment Vital - I wonder if your students' use of 'Ms' is seen as a status thing? Have you discussed it with them? Just curious.
